Okirika boys Ep10: Dead men tell no tales

Am I dead? What are these flashes of light? Normally 4 street we de carry torch in case light no de at the end of the tunnel. My boy, Junior, my innocent son. I hope he will be fine and a little proud of me. What are these voices I'm hearing? Why am I not on a queue for judgement? Abi dem been de whine us. Be like na hell I de go sha because why everywhere dark. I jerked up and my heart was racing so fast I could hear my pulse. Where am I? Who goes you? I kept having these crazy episodes for a while till One day I was eventually calm. I was in a military hospital with cuffs on my hands. I was told that I was in coma for 8 months.

The doctors and nurses barely said anything to me during recovery and I was slowly loosing grip of reality. One morning, after my evaluation, I was dressed in prisoners robe and put in prison. Prison was no issue for me because everyone knew me and to know me is to fear me. I was told that I will be appearing in court in 2 weeks. You see prison is just like the streets. There are kings, territories, soldiers, and taxes to be paid. Some of my loyalists briefed me that there was a king and I should watch my back. Person wey don die before no fit fear coffin. The night before my appearance in court, some guys beat me up and dragged me to the prison king.

As he approached me I raised my hand to guide my face in case he wan deck me. The next thing I heard was make una comot. When a man looks at the mirror he sees more that himself. It was as though I was looking at an older version of my self. It didn't make any sense until he showed me his palm. No, no, no, I kept screaming no. What is this feeling? Who are you? He knew and I knew but I was unwilling to accept it. I moved towards the wall but he followed me and held me. The only time I ever felt this was when I hugged Junior. I kept struggling but I eventually caved in and surrendered.

I guess I am truly my father's son. We spoke till morning. That night felt like forever. We weren't so different. He got teary when I told him about Junior. As the soldiers came to take me out, he nodded said to me, my pikin, na man you be. There were about 8 of us in court. Shadow was there too but in handcuffs. They mentioned all my charges and I was just laughing! You would have guessed that I would get the death penalty but I started capping. I mentioned all the runs we did for the government and high ranking officials. I mentioned that I had a fail safe and the documents were to be made public by news outlets if I'm not released. Shadow also spoke about black ops for the government and where the bodies were buried.

We, I mean myself and Shadow walked out with new identities on the condition that we say nothing. That was na small thing because dead men tell no tales. Outside the court, Shadow nodded at me and I did the same. That was us telling each other thank you as we owed each other our lives. I didn't think so much about what I'd do with my life. I just wanted to see Junior. I thought to myself, these people give me new identity but dem no fit give me new clothes. I guess once an Okirika boy always an Okirika boy!
