Sardines under disco lights

‎i feel the boom of the speakers reverberate in my body. i'm not high yet, but i feel my consciousness peel out of my vessel. everybody is around me, their bodies rhythmically intertwined w the sounds around them. my friend pulls me from the trance i'm in as he leads me to the restroom to smoke a joint. he lights up the joint, takes a drag, n passes it to me. with the joint in my hand, he starts talking about the drama going on in his workplace. the sound pouring out from the dance floor drowns his voice at intervals while i nod absentmindedly n give witty remarks here n there.

‎

‎a guy walks in on us smoking. he goes to ease himself in one of the cubicles before walking out. he stares at me intently, probably wondering why the hell is that dude wearing that.

‎

‎my nipples poking out of the black cotton crop shirt i had on, w the joint laced between my lips, i was dazed.

‎

‎the music, which was just loud, felt different now. each note i heard led a series of satisfying pulses down my body.

‎

‎my friend n i make our way out to the dj booth, vibing to the music.

‎

‎by the side of the booth, a girl is already drunk n passed out. the boys at her table are trying to get her out of the club. i couldn't help but stare cos i was thinking about how not-so-good the situation could be for her. the girl had a nude mesh gown on, her braids splayed on the chair as she was unconscious.

‎

‎people still dancing while miss mesh gown was out of it, i kept on looking in her direction just to see if she's safe. one of the boys at the table sat by her side, w her head now on his thighs.

‎

‎my friend pulls me for a video as asake's "forgiveness" starts blasting from the speakers. we're lip syncing when the bouncers at the door get pushed in and are down on the floor.

‎

‎"wetin dey happen?" the hypeman w the microphone in his hand asks. people start rushing north towards us at the dj booth. the first gunshot isn't heard over the music, but when a body drops, oozing blood from the chest, immediately, the club goes into a frenzy. everyone is trying to get out.

‎

‎the music stops playing. the sounds that bounce off the walls now are the shrill screams n cries of people.

‎

‎"move back," one of the armed men yells. he shoots his gun in the air, which takes out the led lights.

‎

‎"una nor dey hear?" a deep baritone from the rear of the bar says. he aims his gun at the people in his line of fire.

‎

‎"all of you, lie down now," another order comes from one of the assailants. mind you, the club is packed, it's like we're sardines in a can.

‎

‎"he say make una lie down," the baritone voice says w a rush.

‎

‎"kogba, come meet me for door, before we wipe everybody for here."

‎

‎the tall figure walks on the bodies lying on the floor. the bodies wince n groan as he moves left n right, looking for who he came for.

‎

‎"kogba, you no wan come out?" the tall figure continues.

‎

‎the club is dark, the disco light n the rotating coloured lights the only sources of illumination.

‎

‎the tall figure snaps his fingers. seven armed guys run a perimeter around the bodies on the floor. my friend n i, at the northwest side close to the bathroom, are about to run in n hide there until the second gunshot fires, n we just fall flat on the floor.

‎

‎one of the guys heads towards us. he has a rifle facing down, w his grip on the trigger. he moves it as he examines the people on the floor. the bridge of my nose kisses the floor as he moves closer, my heart about to pop out of my chest at any minute.

‎

‎my friend's phone starts ringing.

‎

‎another gunshot.

‎

‎"victor, what the fuck, you're bleeding, your mouth—" i start.

‎

‎"jesus, victor." i'm crying now.

‎

‎the assailant w the rifle shot him on his back. his blood seeps out of his blue satin shirt onto the floor. my ears are still ringing from the ricochet. i'm lying in the pool of his blood, yanking his hand, begging him to stay awake.

‎

‎in the moment i see his body become inanimate, i don't feel any of my senses.

‎

‎i stopped feeling.
