The Man in My Video

If somebody had told me that I would spend a Tuesday morning investigating my own death, I would have asked the person whether they had taken their drugs

But there I was

Standing by the roadside, holding a loaf of free bread, staring at a video of myself that I had never recorded

At this point, I had three options

One, go to the hospital and check whether I was mentally okay

Two, go to church and pray against whatever spirit was disturbing me

Three, go home and slap my younger brother for already planning to inherit my belongings

I chose option three

Family first π

I turned to Tunde

"Guy, let's go to my house."

He looked at me as if I had invited him to enter a burning building

"Your house?"

"No, my village square. Of course, my house!"

He swallowed

"Guy, I don't think I can follow you."

I stared at him

"Tunde, you followed me to collect money from my uncle when he won a lottery. You followed me to three different restaurants because you wanted free food. You followed me to a football viewing centre when you didn't even know the two teams playing."

I moved closer to him

"But today, when I need you to help me investigate my own death, you suddenly remember that you have a family?"

He looked away

"Guy, things are different now"

"DIFFERENT HOW?"

He pointed at my phone

"You're supposed to be dead!"

I looked at him for a moment.

Then I nodded slowly

"You're right."

He sighed in relief

"Thank you."

"So, since I'm dead, give me the β¦3,500 you owe me. Let me use it to buy flowers for my own grave"

Tunde immediately started walking towards my house

"Let's go. We have a case to solve."

π

MY HOUSE, 8:12 A.M

When we arrived, I noticed that our front door was open

That was strange

My mother usually locked the door even when she was sitting directly in front of it

She once locked me outside for twenty minutes because she said I didn't knock properly

And now, the door was wide open

I entered cautiously

"Mummy?"

Silence

"Mummy, I'm back!"

From the kitchen, I heard something fall

Then my mother appeared

She was holding a plate

The moment she saw me, the plate slipped from her hands

CRASH!

"MUMMY!"

She grabbed her chest

"JESUS! JESUS CHRIST!"

I rushed towards her

"Mummy, wetin happen?"

She backed away

"Don't come near me!"

I stopped

"Mummy, na me o!"

She started crying

"My son!"

"Yes, Mummy!"

"My son, why did you leave us?"

I stared at her

At this point, I was beginning to understand why people said raising children was difficult

Because apparently, even after raising me for years, my own mother could no longer recognise me when Facebook announced my death

"Mummy, I did not leave you! I went to buy bread!"

She looked at the bread in my hand

Then she looked at my face

Then she started crying again

"Even in death, you still remembered to buy bread for your family."

I nearly swallowed my tongue

"MUMMY, PLEASE!"

Tunde was standing behind me, trying very hard not to laugh

I turned around.l

"If you laugh, I'll make sure you die before me."

He immediately became serious

My mother eventually sat down, and I explained everything to her

The Facebook post

The comments

The video

Everything

When I finished, she wiped her tears and looked at me

"My son, have you offended anybody?"

I blinked

"Mummy?"

"Because this kind of thing doesn't happen for nothing."

I looked at Tunde

Tunde looked at me

We both looked at my mother

"Mummy, are you suggesting that somebody killed me spiritually and Facebook is just the messenger?"

She shrugged

"I'm only asking questions."

I shook my head

In this family, even supernatural problems required a family meeting

THE FIRST CLUE

After calming my mother down, I rushed to my room

My younger brother was sitting on my bed

Eating my biscuits

Wearing my shirt

Using my charger

And watching television with my fan turned towards his face

I stood at the doorway

He looked at me

I looked at him

He looked at the biscuits

Then he slowly placed the remaining ones on the bed

"Bro..."

I smiled

"Yes, my dear brother?"

He stood up

"Welcome back."

"Thank you."

"I didn't know you were coming."

"Obviously."

He pointed at the biscuits

"I can explain."

I nodded

"Please, explain how you managed to mourn me, announce that you would take care of my belongings, and still find time to wear my shirt."

He opened his mouth

Closed it

Then he said something that almost made me forget the entire mystery

"Bro, I thought you wouldn't need them anymore."

I took a deep breath

Tunde turned towards the wall

His shoulders were shaking

That useless boy was laughing!

I pointed at my brother

"Remove my shirt."

He quickly pulled it over his head

"Not like that, you idiot! Go and change into your own clothes!"

He ran into his room

I sat down and opened the mysterious video again

This time, I watched it carefully

The video was only eighteen seconds long

The person in it was wearing a black hoodie

The same type of hoodie I owned

He walked past the gate of our house at night

Then he stopped

He turned towards the camera

And smiled

I paused the video

Something about that smile bothered me

It wasn't just that the person looked like me

It was the way he tilted his head

The way he raised one eyebrow

The way he smiled with the left side of his mouth

Those were little things I did without even thinking about them

I replayed the video

Once

Twice

Three times

Then I noticed something in the background

A small blue bucket beside the gate

I knew that bucket

It belonged to our neighbour, Mama Chinedu

The same woman who had cried when she saw me that morning

I zoomed in

Behind the bucket was a wall clock visible through the open window of the neighbouring house

The time on the clock was 2:03

I checked the timestamp on the Facebook post

2:03 A.M

My stomach tightened

The video and the announcement had appeared at exactly the same time

I looked at Tunde

"Guy, something is wrong."

He leaned closer

"What's wrong?"

I pointed at the screen

"Look at the time."

He stared at it

Then he whispered

"Somebody recorded this video last night."

"Exactly."

"And that person looks like you."

"Exactly."

"And your account announced your death at the same time"

"EXACTLY!"

He jumped up

"GUY, STOP SAYING EXACTLY! I'M TRYING TO THINK!"

I stared at him

"Then think faster!"

Suddenly, my phone rang

Unknown number

I answered

"Hello?"

For a few seconds, there was nothing but silence

Then a man's voice came through

"Are you the owner of this phone?"

I frowned

"Yes. Who is this?"

"My name is Inspector Adewale. I'm calling from the police station."

I sat upright

Tunde immediately stopped talking

The inspector continued

"We received a report this morning concerning a missing person."

I swallowed

"Okay..."

"The report contains your name, your photograph, and your home address"

I looked at Tunde

He was staring at me

"Sir, I'm not missing. I'm right here."

There was a pause

Then the inspector asked

"Are you currently at home?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Please don't leave your house. An officer will come to speak with you shortly."

I was about to ask another question when he added

"There's something else you need to know."

My grip tightened around the phone

"What is it, sir?"

"The person who filed the report claims that he saw you last night."

I frowned

"Who filed the report?"

The inspector read out a name

I didn't recognise it

Then he described the man's appearance

My heart began to pound

Because the description matched the person in the video

I tried to speak, but no words came out

Finally, I managed to ask

"Sir, did the person leave a photograph?"

"Yes."

"Can you send it to me?"

"I'll see what I can do."

The call ended

For several seconds, nobody spoke

Then Tunde quietly asked

"Guy... what if that person is your twin?"

I turned towards him

"I don't have a twin."

"What if your parents didn't tell you?"

I grabbed a pillow and threw it at his face

"TUNDE, MY MOTHER HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT MY SCHOOL FEES SINCE I WAS FIVE! IF SHE HAD TWO OF US, I WOULD HAVE KNOWN!"

He dodged the pillow

"I'm just saying!"

I returned my attention to the phone

A message had arrived

Unknown number

One photograph attached

I opened it

My room appeared on the screen

My bed

My wardrobe

My window

And me

Sleeping

I stared at the picture

The camera angle suggested that whoever took it had been standing right beside my bed

But that wasn't the worst part

At the bottom of the photograph was a timestamp

2:03 A.M

And beside my bed, standing in the darkness, was another figure

Wearing my black hoodie

Looking directly at the camera

I zoomed in on the face

My blood ran cold

It was me

Not someone who looked like me

Not a relative

Not a stranger wearing my clothes

ME

The same face

The same eyes

The same little scar above my right eyebrow

But there was something wrong with his expression

He wasn't smiling anymore

He was pointing at my sleeping body

And beneath the photograph, the unknown sender had written one sentence

"ASK YOUR BROTHER WHAT HE DID AT 2:03 A.M."

I slowly lowered my phone

Then I turned towards my younger brother's room

The door was closed

I walked towards it

Knocked once

No answer

Knocked again

Still nothing

I tried the handle

The door opened

The room was empty

My brother was gone

But on his bed lay my old phone

The one I had lost three months ago

The one I had searched everywhere for

The one I had never told anybody I found inside my wardrobe last night

I stepped closer

The screen lit up

A Facebook notification appeared

YOUR LIVE VIDEO HAS ENDED

I stared at the screen

Then I saw the number of viewers

1,000,000

And the video title?

It was my name

I tapped it

The screen went black

Then a voice whispered from the phone speaker

My own voice

"Brother... if you're watching this, it means they haven't buried you yet."

I couldn't breathe

The voice continued

"Listen carefully.
