THE LAST VOICE NOTE SHE NEVER OPENED — PART THREE

“Lina, it's Dad.”

She stopped breathing.

For twenty years, Lina had imagined what her father's voice might sound like if she ever heard it again. She had tried to remember little things from childhood, the way he laughed, the way he called her name, the sound of his footsteps coming through the front door after work.

But memory had become unreliable.

She had been six when he supposedly died.

Becky had been four.

Their mother had raised them alone and told them the same story so many times that eventually it stopped sounding like a story. Their father had been involved in an accident on his way home. He had died before he reached the hospital. There had been a funeral. There had been tears. There had been a grave.

Then life continued.

Except now there was a man standing behind the back door claiming to be him.

Lina looked at her mother.

Her mother was crying.

“Mum…”

The door handle moved again.

“Lina, please open the door.”

That voice.

There was no mistaking it anymore.

She walked towards the door, but her mother grabbed her arm.

“Don't.”

“That's Dad.”

“Lina, listen to me.”

“That's Dad!”

Her mother started sobbing.

“He's alive.”

The words barely came out.

Lina stared at her.

“You knew?”

“I thought he was dead.”

“You just said he's alive.”

“I thought he was dead,” her mother repeated. “I haven't seen him in years.”

Lina pulled her arm away.

She opened the door.

The man standing there looked older than the photograph in her mother's room, of course. His hair was mostly grey, his face thinner, and there were deep lines around his eyes.

But it was him.

Her father.

Lina couldn't speak.

Neither could he.

He simply looked at her, and tears filled his eyes.

“Lina.”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

Her father didn't move.

“You're dead,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“You let us believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You watched Mum raise us alone.”

“I know.”

“You missed everything.”

His eyes closed.

“I know.”

Lina pushed him.

“Then why?”

He didn't defend himself.

Instead, he looked towards the photograph on the floor.

“Because I thought staying away from you was the only way to keep you alive.”

Lina laughed bitterly.

“You call this keeping us alive?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I call it the worst decision I have ever made.”

Then he told them everything.

Twenty years earlier, he had discovered that someone at the company he worked for was stealing money and using the business to hide other illegal activities. He had collected evidence because he believed the people responsible would eventually be exposed.

But they found out.

They threatened him.

Then they threatened his family.

He had gone to the police, but someone he trusted betrayed him. The night he was supposed to hand over the evidence, he disappeared.

His car was found abandoned.

The men responsible wanted everyone to believe he had been killed.

Instead, he ran.

He changed his identity and spent years moving from place to place, trying to find enough evidence to bring the people responsible down.

“But why didn't you come back?” Lina asked.

Her father looked at her mother.

“Because every time I thought about coming home, they found me again.”

Lina's mother started crying.

“You could have told us.”

“I couldn't.”

“You could have sent one message.”

“I was afraid they would trace it.”

“You could have let us know you were alive!”

“I know.”

Her father looked at Lina.

“That is the part I will regret until I die.”

Lina wiped her tears.

“And Becky?”

Her father's expression changed.

“She found me.”

Lina froze.

“What?”

“Becky found out that I was alive about six months ago.”

Her mother covered her mouth.

“She started looking for answers. She found documents I had hidden years ago. She found people who knew me. Eventually, she found me.”

Lina remembered the photograph.

The photograph of Becky sitting in that strange room.

“She was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

Her father looked down.

“Becky wasn't killed in the accident.”

Lina felt her knees weaken.

“What?”

“She was taken.”

Her father explained that Becky had been investigating the same people he had spent years trying to expose. When they realised she knew too much, they followed her.

The accident had been staged.

Becky survived.

But she was being held somewhere while they tried to find out how much she knew.

“She sent you the voice notes because she managed to get access to her phone.”

Lina started crying.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“She was afraid they would come after you.”

“And Mum?”

Her father looked at her mother.

“She knew some of it.”

Lina turned.

“Mum?”

Her mother was crying too hard to speak.

“I knew your father was alive,” she finally whispered. “Not where he was. Not everything. But I knew he hadn't died the way I told you.”

Lina stared at her.

“Why did you lie to us?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“You let me mourn him for twenty years.”

“I know.”

“You let Becky mourn him too.”

“I know.”

“And when Becky was in danger, you still didn't tell me.”

Her mother lowered her head.

“I thought if you knew, you would go looking for her.”

Lina's tears fell freely now.

“She was my sister.”

“I know.”

“She needed me.”

“I know.”

Lina turned away.

For the first time, she understood that sometimes people could love you deeply and still hurt you terribly.

Her phone vibrated.

Everyone went silent.

A message had arrived.

From Becky's number.

I'm sorry.

Lina opened it immediately.

There was a voice note.

This time, the recording was clear.

Becky's voice sounded weak, but she was alive.

“Lina, if you're hearing this, then Dad found you.”

Lina covered her mouth.

“I know you're angry. You should be. I was angry too.”

There was a small laugh in the recording.

“I wanted to tell you everything, but every time I tried, I kept thinking about what could happen to you.”

Lina cried harder.

“I also need you to know something. I wasn't angry that you didn't answer my call that night. I know you think about that. I know you're probably blaming yourself.”

Lina closed her eyes.

“I don't want you to do that.”

Becky took a shaky breath.

“You were my sister before you were the person who was supposed to save me. You were allowed to be tired. You were allowed to miss a call. You were allowed to have your own life.”

Lina slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

“I love you, Lina.”

There was silence.

Then Becky whispered,

“And I'm sorry I scared you.”

The voice note ended.

Lina held the phone against her chest and cried.

Her father stood quietly beside her.

Then another message arrived.

This one wasn't from Becky.

It was a location.

Lina looked at her father.

“Where is this?”

He recognised it immediately.

“That is where they are keeping her.”

They left before sunrise.

For the first time in years, Lina, her mother and her father walked towards the same place with the same purpose.

They found Becky in an abandoned building outside the city.

She was weak.

She had lost weight.

There were bruises on her arms.

But she was alive.

When Lina saw her, she ran.

Becky looked up.

For one second, neither sister spoke.

Then Lina fell beside her and held her.

“You're alive.”

Becky started crying.

“I told you I was.”

“You scared me.”

“I know.”

“I thought I lost you.”

“I know.”

Lina held her tighter.

“I never listened to the first voice note.”

Becky pulled away slightly.

“I know.”

“How?”

Becky smiled through her tears.

“Because you told me you had 2% battery.”

Lina laughed through her crying.

“I hate you.”

“No, you don't.”

“No, I really hate you.”

Becky hugged her again.

Their father stood a few steps away, watching them.

For the first time in twenty years, he was looking at both of his daughters.

Alive.

Together.

And perhaps that was enough.

Months later, the truth about the people who had been responsible finally came out. The evidence Becky had found, combined with what her father had spent years collecting, was enough to expose them.

But Lina never forgot the voice note.

She kept it.

Not because she wanted to remember the fear.

She kept it because of what Becky had said at the end.

You were allowed to miss a call.

Sometimes Lina still listened to it.

Especially on the days when she felt guilty about something she couldn't change.

And every time she heard Becky's voice, she remembered that last sentence.

She had spent so much time believing that if she had only answered that phone call, everything would have been different.

But life doesn't give us the luxury of knowing which ordinary moment is going to become our last chance.

Sometimes we miss the call.

Sometimes we reply tomorrow.

Sometimes we say, “I'll call you when I get home,” believing home will still be there when we arrive.

Lina learned that the hardest thing about losing someone isn't always the goodbye.

Sometimes it's the things you were supposed to say before it.

The apology you thought you had time for.

The conversation you kept postponing.

The voice note you promised yourself you would listen to later.

And perhaps that is why she never ignored Becky's calls again.

Not because she was afraid of losing her.

But because she had finally learned something she wished she had understood years earlier.

Sometimes the people we love aren't asking us to fix their lives.

Sometimes they just want us to answer the phone.
