I took a deep breath, trying to smooth down my messy hair and assemble some sense of composure. Sitting on the edge of the bed for a few seconds longer, I stared at the empty space where you had just been sitting.

Why is it so hard to just be honest? I thought, pressing my palms against my face. It’s just words.

By the time I finally walked into the small kitchen, you were standing by the counter pouring two mugs. The morning sun beamed through the window, framing you in warmth. You looked so calm, so completely at home in my space, as if you belonged here all along.

"Here," you said, handing me a mug as I walked up to the counter. "Black, no sugar. Just the way you like it."

"Thanks," I replied. Our fingers brushed against each other for a fraction of a second, and a sharp spark ran up my arm. I pulled back a little too quickly, nearly spilling the hot liquid on my shirt.

You noticed, of course. Your eyes narrowed slightly, watching me over the rim of your cup as you took a slow sip.

"Okay, seriously," you said, setting your mug down on the counter with a quiet clack. "What is going on with you today? You’ve been acting completely jittery since you woke up."

"I told you, I'm just hungry," I insisted, leaning against the edge of the table to put some distance between us. "My brain doesn't function well on an empty stomach."

"You're a terrible liar, you know that?" you said softly, walking over to stand right in front of me. You were close enough that I could smell the faint scent of vanilla and coffee. "We’ve known each other for three years. You think I don't know the difference between 'hungry' you and 'something-is-bothering-me' you?"

My heart began its familiar, erratic rhythm again.

"What if something is bothering me, but I'm just not sure how to say it?" I blurted out before my brain could filter the thought.

The playful atmosphere in the kitchen dissolved instantly. Your posture changed, becoming still and focused. The gentle smirk left your lips, replaced by a quiet, serious expression.

"Try me," you said softly, stepping even closer. "Since when do you hide anything from me?"

"Since it became complicated," I whispered, holding your gaze for a second too long before turning away toward the stove. "Forget it. Let's just make breakfast."

You didn't push further, but the lingering look you gave me said everything: the conversation was far from over.

Enjoyed Chapter 2?
