UNDERSTANDING A GOOD RECORD DEAL 1

A record deal has a coverage.

Ayra Starr’s record deal with Mavin reportedly requires her to deliver 5 albums. She wasn’t blind when she signed it, and if the contract does not give her an option to terminate early, then the only way out may be to fulfill the remaining obligations — reportedly by delivering two more albums next year.

This is not wickedness. It is business.

A label cannot invest heavily in an artist without protecting its investment. Has Mavin recovered its ₦500 million? Yes. But does the contract say Mavin must terminate the deal immediately after recovering ₦500 million? No. Recoupment is not necessarily the end of a record deal.

The label needs profit.

And if an artist insists on terminating a contract, the consequences depend entirely on the terms they signed. If the agreement gives the label rights over the artist’s name, social media accounts, YouTube channel, masters, or other intellectual property, those rights can become very important in an exit dispute.

The “Ayra Starr” name itself may also be subject to intellectual-property rights depending on how it was registered and what the contract says. If she wanted to retain the rights, she could potentially have to negotiate a buyback or deal with the consequences of changing her stage name.

We have seen situations where artists have had to change names after leaving labels — Kiss Daniel became Kizz Daniel after his dispute with G-Worldwide.

Can Ayra Starr maintain her influence without Mavin?

Nobody can say for certain. But one thing is clear: leaving a label does not automatically mean leaving with everything the label helped build.

You can outgrow a record label, but don’t ever underestimate the contract you signed with that label.

My next post will help you understand record deals and some of the “evil clauses” that can quietly change your situation the moment you put pen on paper.
