WHEN SUFFERING BECOMES A SKILL

There are now two Nigerias.

One lives at home, waking up to fuel prices that magically change overnight, to inflated prices of foodstuffs before salary even arrives, to a CV that has been updated fifty times with no reply. One lives abroad, in Peckham, in Houston, in Toronto, working double shifts, sending money home that disappears in two days, learning how to smile in a country that does recognize his worth.

And yet both are performing the same act.

The one at home must hustle wetin no good to survive. He must look poor enough to get help, humble enough to get a job, hopeless enough to be pitied by a system that only responds to desperation.

The one abroad must feign success to survive. She must post pictures that say “I made it,” even when she is cleaning floors with a master’s degree. She must hide her loneliness, because her family back home believes she now plucks money from trees.

One is forced to exaggerate his pain. The other is forced to hide it.

That is the current life of a Nigerian. At home, you are told to endure. Outside, you are told to prove that enduring was worth it. No one is allowed to just be okay, to just be average, to just be tired.

So the whole nation has learned a strange, collective skill. Not farming. Not building. Not dreaming.

The skill of packaging pain.

And when people become experts at packaging pain, they slowly forget how to package hope.

Stay tuned for more insights like this

IZRPlays
