A CONTINENT OF DIFFERENCES

We say “Africa” like it’s one thing.

But a person from Nigeria and someone from Morocco can have completely different languages, religions, histories, ethnicities, cultures, colonial experiences, food, music and even completely different definitions of what “African” means to them.

If so what exactly connects us?

Is it geography?

It connects us physically but geography doesn’t create identity.

Is it our skin colour?

It can’t be because Africa contains and spans enormous ethnical and racial diversity.

Is it our history then?

History connects us but our histories aren’t identical?

Do we Africans really have a shared identity or have we simply been grouped together by borders and maps Europeans decided to draw?

I feel like we don’t have to be the same thing.

Or the same people.

A Nigerian might look different, act different, speak different from an Ugandan but that does make either of them less African.

Maybe the mistake is confusing unity for similarity.

We are 54 nations but that doesn’t mean we have to be 54 completely unrelated people.

You see a lot can divide us yet we can travel outside Africa meet another African and feel a sense of familiarity.

But why?

What is that feeling based on?

Culture?

Shared experiences?

Similar struggles?

Or simply the knowledge of you came from somewhere I understand, even if I don’t understand you completely.
