FOOD OR DISH? 🤔🍲

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the difference between food and a dish? We use the two words almost interchangeably, especially when we're talking about what we ate.

But they aren't exactly the same.

Food is the bigger idea. It includes the things we eat to nourish our bodies—rice, beans, yam, plantain, vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, and so much more.

A dish, on the other hand, is what happens when different ingredients come together and are prepared in a particular way.

Take Africa, for example. 🌍

Rice is food. But jollof rice? That's a whole dish—and in many African homes, it comes with memories, arguments, celebrations, and sometimes even family secrets about whose jollof tastes better. 😂

Yam is food. But pounded yam with egusi soup? That's a dish.

Cassava is food. But garri, eba, or fufu made from it? Those are prepared foods and dishes with their own identities.

And let's not forget plantain. It can be boiled, fried, roasted, or prepared in different ways. Same basic food, different dishes.

This is one of the beautiful things about African food culture: the ingredients may be simple, but the way we transform them can create something completely different.

A pot of food can also be more than just food. It can represent home. It can remind someone of their grandmother's kitchen, Sunday afternoons, family gatherings, or the smell of something cooking before you even reach the door.

So, is every dish food?

Yes.

But is every food a dish?

Not necessarily.

Food is the raw idea; a dish is often the creation.

And perhaps that's why food is more than something we eat. Sometimes, it carries culture, history, memories, and a little piece of where we come from. 🌍❤️

So the next time you hear, “What food are you eating?” maybe pause and ask yourself: “Do they mean the food—or the dish?” 😉

Sometimes, a simple dish tells a story that words cannot. 🌍✨
At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
