But I stayed because of you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked at me for a long moment.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then he said something I'll never forget.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I knew.”</p><p><br/></p><p>My tears stopped.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I knew from the beginning.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I stared at him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What do you mean?”</p><p><br/></p><p>He reached for his phone and showed me a recording.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was a conversation between me and the woman who hired me.</p><p><br/></p><p>My stomach dropped.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You knew?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Yes.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Then why did you let me continue?”</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked away.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because I wanted to know if anyone could ever love me without wanting something from me.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I couldn't breathe.</p><p><br/></p><p>“So all this time…”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Yes.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“You were testing me?”</p><p><br/></p><p>His eyes met mine.</p><p><br/></p><p>“And somewhere along the way, I stopped testing you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He stepped closer.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I fell in love with you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I cried harder.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Then why are you letting me go?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because love isn't supposed to begin with a lie.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was right.</p><p><br/></p><p>I turned toward the door.</p><p><br/></p><p>But before I could leave, he called my name.</p><p><br/></p><p>I looked back.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Who paid you?”</p><p><br/></p><p>I hesitated.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then I told him.</p><p><br/></p><p>His face changed instantly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because the woman who paid me wasn't a stranger.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was his mother.</p><p><br/></p><p>The woman he had believed died ten years ago.</p><p><br/></p><p>And suddenly, Daniel understood.</p><p><br/></p><p>The money wasn't meant to make me break his heart.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was meant to make me discover why he had been lied to about her death.</p><p><br/></p><p>And the woman who hired me?</p><p><br/></p><p>She wasn't trying to destroy his life.</p><p><br/></p><p>She was trying to find her way back into it.</p>
