The Person I Almost Became

THE PERSON I ALMOST BECAME

I met her on a Tuesday.

At least, that is what I remember.

She was sitting alone in a café, staring at a cup of coffee she hadn't touched.

Something about her felt familiar.

Not her face.

Her silence.

The way she kept looking at the door whenever it opened, as if expecting someone who had already disappointed her too many times.

I didn't know why, but I sat across from her.

“Do I know you?” she asked.

I smiled.

“I was about to ask you the same thing.”

She laughed.

And there it was.

The laugh I used to have.

Unforced. Careless. Almost embarrassing in how easily it escaped.

We talked for hours.

She told me about the things she wanted to do but kept postponing. The places she wanted to visit. The person she wanted to become.

I listened.

Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.

“I keep waiting for my life to start.”

I looked at her.

I knew that sentence.

I had lived inside it.

For years, I had made myself smaller to fit into rooms that were never built for me. I had swallowed opinions, postponed dreams, forgiven things I shouldn't have, and called it maturity.

I had become very good at surviving a life I didn't particularly like.

She looked at me.

“Do you ever feel like you became someone you didn't recognize?”

I almost answered.

Instead, I asked, “What happened?”

She shrugged.

“Nothing.”

That was the problem.

Nothing happened.

There was no dramatic ending. No single moment where everything fell apart.

Just little choices.

One day at a time.

One compromise after another.

Until one morning, she woke up and realised she had become someone she had once promised herself she would never be.

I wanted to warn her.

I wanted to tell her to leave.

To speak.

To choose herself sooner.

But then she reached across the table and touched my hand.

“Thank you for listening.”

I looked down at our hands.

And suddenly, I understood why she had felt so familiar.

She wasn't a stranger.

She was me.

Not the woman I was.

The woman I almost became.

The version of me that would have existed if I had kept saying yes when I meant no.

If I had stayed where I was unhappy because leaving was inconvenient.

If I had kept waiting for permission to become myself.

I looked up.

The chair across from me was empty.

My coffee was cold.

And for the first time, I was grateful for all the small decisions that had brought me somewhere else.

I didn't meet the person I used to be.

I met the person I could have become.

And maybe that was enough warning.

Maybe sometimes we don't need to see our future.

Sometimes, we only need to recognise the life we're quietly walking toward.
