THE STUDENT WHO ALMOST GAVE UP

“Your result is getting worse.”

Daniel stared at the paper in his hand.

He already knew.

He didn't need the red marks scattered across the page to tell him.

He didn't need his lecturer's disappointed expression either.

He had been trying.

At least, he thought he was.

Every morning, Daniel woke up before everyone else. He would reach for his phone, not to scroll through social media, but to check the time and calculate how much longer he could sleep.

Sometimes, he slept for only three hours.

Other nights, he didn't sleep at all.

But nobody knew that.

To everyone in class, Daniel was simply the student whose grades were dropping.

They didn't know that before coming to school, he sometimes had to wait until his roommates were done eating before he could ask if there was anything left.

They didn't know he had stopped buying some of the things he needed because he was trying to save the little money he had.

They didn't know that whenever his classmates complained about how expensive a textbook was, Daniel would quietly calculate how many meals that same amount could buy.

And they definitely didn't know about home.

His mother had been struggling to keep the family going since his father's business collapsed.

Every time Daniel called, she tried to sound cheerful.

“How is school?”

“I'm fine, Mama.”

“Are you eating well?”

“Yes.”

That was another lie.

One evening, she called again.

“Daniel…”

“Yes, Mama?”

There was silence.

Then she said softly,

“Try and manage things for now. Things are difficult here.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I understand.”

After the call ended, he sat on the edge of his bed and stared at his books.

For the first time, he didn't feel like opening any of them.

He was tired.

Not the kind of tired that sleep could fix.

He was tired of trying to catch up.

Tired of pretending everything was okay.

Tired of watching other students move forward while he felt like he was standing in the same place.

That night, he opened his notebook.

He stared at the first page for several minutes.

Then he wrote:

“Maybe I'm not good enough for this.”

He dropped the pen.

And for the first time since entering university, Daniel seriously considered giving up.

The next morning, he went to class.

His lecturer returned their assignments.

Daniel expected another poor grade.

Instead, his lecturer stopped beside his desk.

“Daniel, can I see you after class?”

His heart sank.

After everyone left, Daniel stood quietly in front of the lecturer.

“I've noticed something,” the lecturer said.

Daniel looked down.

“You are intelligent. But lately, you look like someone who is fighting a battle nobody knows about.”

Daniel didn't respond.

His eyes suddenly became heavy.

“You don't have to tell me everything,” the lecturer continued. “But don't confuse struggling with being incapable.”

That sentence broke something inside him.

Daniel looked away quickly.

A tear escaped.

He wiped it before the lecturer could see.

But the lecturer had already seen it.

“You're not failing because you're stupid,” he said gently. “You're struggling because you're carrying too much.”

Daniel finally sat down.

And for the first time in months, he told someone the truth.

Not everything.

But enough.

He talked about home.

The money.

The sleepless nights.

The hunger.

The pressure.

The fear of disappointing everyone.

When he finished, there was silence.

Then his lecturer said,

“Let's take this one step at a time.”

It wasn't a magical solution.

His problems didn't disappear that day.

His family didn't suddenly become wealthy.

His grades didn't immediately become excellent.

But something changed.

Daniel stopped seeing himself as a failure.

He began studying differently.

He asked questions when he didn't understand.

He found classmates who were willing to study with him.

He learned to tell people when he needed help.

And slowly, his results began to improve.

Not dramatically.

Just little by little.

One evening, months later, Daniel opened his result.

He stared at the screen.

For a few seconds, he couldn't believe it.

His grades weren't perfect.

But they were better.

Much better.

He smiled.

Then he called his mother.

“Mama.”

“Yes, my son?”

“I passed.”

There was silence on the other end.

Then his mother laughed and cried at the same time.

“I knew you would.”

Daniel smiled.

No.

She hadn't always known.

There had been days when even he didn't know.

But that was the point.

Sometimes, the person who almost gives up isn't the person who doesn't care.

Sometimes, they are the person who has been caring for too long.

So if you're a student struggling right now, remember this:

A bad result is information. It is not your identity.

You may be behind.

You may be struggling.

You may even feel like everyone else is moving faster than you.

But don't let one difficult season convince you that you are incapable of reaching the place you're trying to get to.

Sometimes, you don't need to give up.

You just need someone to notice that you're struggling.

And sometimes, that someone has to be you.
