I’m Sitting In Pain

I’m sitting in pain.

And I need you to understand that this is not a metaphor.

I am literally sitting in pain.

There is currently a tiny enemy between my butt cheeks.

A boil.

A chronic pain in the ass

And before you laugh, please remember that life has a way of humbling all of us. Today, it is my backside. Tomorrow, it could be your turn.

I noticed it a few days ago.

It was small.

Manageable.

Almost innocent.

I felt a little discomfort and thought, “Ah, probably nothing.”

And because human beings are experts at negotiating with problems they don't want to deal with, I ignored it.

I went about my business.

I sat down.

I stood up.

I walked around.

I slept.

I continued working.

Meanwhile, somewhere between my butt cheeks, something was holding a very serious board meeting.

Apparently, the agenda was:

“How do we make this man's life unnecessarily difficult?”

And they came up with a plan.

Grow.

It started getting bigger.

Then more painful.

Then increasingly disrespectful.

Suddenly, sitting down became a tactical operation.

I would approach a chair like a bomb disposal expert.

Look at it.

Calculate the angle.

Assess the risk.

Lower myself slowly.

Pause.

Adjust.

Regret my life choices.

And then sit there wondering why I didn't deal with this thing earlier.

That's when it hit me.

This boil is actually a life coach.

An extremely painful one.

Because it reminded me of how we treat problems.

Something starts small.

We notice it.

We know it's there.

We even know it might become a problem.

But because it isn't causing enough pain yet, we ignore it.

“It's nothing.”

“I'll deal with it later.”

“It'll probably disappear.”

“Let's see how things go.”

Famous last words.

And then one day, you're sitting in pain wondering:

“How did we get here?”

But we know how we got there.

We ignored the warning.

And life is full of boils.

Not the ones between your butt cheeks, thankfully.

I'm talking about the little problems we keep postponing.

The debt we keep pretending isn't serious.

The business issue we keep avoiding.

The unhealthy habit we keep defending.

The relationship conversation we keep postponing.

The employee we know isn't working out but refuse to address.

The customer complaint we keep dismissing.

The idea we keep saying we'll start “next month.”

The email we should have answered three weeks ago.

The uncomfortable truth we keep burying because confronting it would require us to actually do something.

The funny thing about problems is that they don't always become bigger because they are powerful.

Sometimes, we make them bigger by giving them time.

A small leak can become a flooded room.

A small debt can become a financial crisis.

A small misunderstanding can become resentment.

A small bad habit can become an addiction.

A small business problem can become a collapsed business.

And a small boil...

Well...

A small boil can turn your chair into your greatest enemy.

So here I am.

Sitting carefully.

Thinking deeply.

And occasionally standing up for no reason.

Not because I have suddenly become philosophical.

Because my butt cheeks have entered negotiations with gravity.

But there's a serious lesson underneath the comedy.

We often wait for pain to become unbearable before we take action.

We wait until the relationship is broken before we communicate.

Until the account is empty before we budget.

Until the business is bleeding before we review the numbers.

Until our bodies force us to pay attention before we take our wellbeing seriously.

We wait for the problem to become loud enough to interrupt our lives.

But wisdom is learning to listen while the problem is still whispering.

You don't have to wait until something hurts badly before deciding that it matters.

Sometimes, the best time to deal with a problem is when it is still small, inconvenient and relatively easy to fix.

Because once it starts controlling where you can sit...

you probably waited too long.

My TwoCents?

Don't ignore small problems simply because they haven't become painful enough yet.

Pay attention.

Deal with them.

Have the conversation.

Make the decision.

Fix the leak.

Review the numbers.

Change the habit.

Ask for help when necessary.

Do whatever needs to be done.

Because life will sometimes give you a warning in the form of a tiny discomfort.

Ignore it long enough...

And eventually, you may find yourself sitting in pain, staring at the ceiling, questioning every decision that brought you to that chair.

As for me?

I'm learning my lesson.

The hard way.

From between my butt cheeks.

And honestly...

I don't recommend the classroom.
