Pass Go or Go To Jail
<p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>The old Monopoly board was spread across the table.</p><p><br/></p><p>Four friends sat around it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde had the red pieces.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya had the blue.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi had the little dog.</p><p><br/></p><p>And Kola had the thimble.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody came to lose.</p><p><br/></p><p>They came to win.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Let's go,” Tunde said.</p><p><br/></p><p>The dice rolled.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>GO</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>He collected his money.</p><p><br/></p><p>Everybody smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was only the beginning.</p><p><br/></p><p>That was how life usually started too.</p><p><br/></p><p>You arrive.</p><p><br/></p><p>You collect something.</p><p><br/></p><p>You make plans.</p><p><br/></p><p>You think you have enough time.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then you roll again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde landed on a cheap property.</p><p><br/></p><p>He bought it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya landed on another.</p><p><br/></p><p>She bought hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi passed.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I'll wait for something better.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That's what everybody says until somebody else buys it.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Three rounds later, Kola owned half of one colour group.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya had two railroads.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde had several properties but very little cash.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi still had plenty of money.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was proud of it.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Cash is king,” he said.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody argued.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then he landed on someone's property.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>RENT</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>He paid.</p><p><br/></p><p>Next round, he paid again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then again.</p><p><br/></p><p>His cash started disappearing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Suddenly, the man who had been bragging about having the most money was the one borrowing from the bank.</p><p><br/></p><p>The game continued.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde finally completed a colour group.</p><p><br/></p><p>He built a house.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>Everyone started avoiding his side of the board.</p><p><br/></p><p>But Tunde became greedy.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I need a hotel.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“You need cash first,” Maya warned.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I'll get it.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He mortgaged another property.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>He got his hotel.</p><p><br/></p><p>For a few rounds, he looked unbeatable.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Kola landed on his property.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>RENT</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola paid him a fortune.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>“See?”</p><p><br/></p><p>But the next turn, Tunde landed somewhere else.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another player's property.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>RENT</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>He paid.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came another payment.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>The hotel that had made him feel powerful had also made him vulnerable.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had assets.</p><p><br/></p><p>But no breathing space.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya shook the dice.</p><p><br/></p><p>They rolled.</p><p><br/></p><p>She landed on <strong>CHANCE</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>She picked a card.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Advance to GO.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Everybody laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>She collected her money.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Sometimes,” she said, “life just gives you a break.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi rolled next.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>GO TO JAIL</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>The room went quiet.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Just like that?” he asked.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Just like that,” Kola said.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi went to Jail.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was angry.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I didn't even do anything.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That's the funny thing about life. Sometimes you don't need to understand the punishment before you serve it.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi spent three turns trying to get out.</p><p><br/></p><p>While he was in Jail, the others kept buying properties.</p><p><br/></p><p>When he finally returned, the board had changed.</p><p><br/></p><p>That was another lesson.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Life does not stop because you are stuck</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>The world keeps moving.</p><p><br/></p><p>People keep buying.</p><p><br/></p><p>People keep building.</p><p><br/></p><p>People keep passing you.</p><p><br/></p><p>And when you finally come out, you may discover that the things you wanted are no longer available.</p><p><br/></p><p>The game became serious.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde's cash was falling.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi was recovering.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya was quietly building.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola had the railroads.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came <strong>INCOME TAX</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola groaned.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Again?”</p><p><br/></p><p>He paid.</p><p><br/></p><p>A few turns later:</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>LUXURY TAX</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>He paid again.</p><p><br/></p><p>The table erupted in laughter.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You can't escape tax,” Maya said.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola shook his head.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Even in a game.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Especially in a game.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came <strong>COMMUNITY CHEST</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya picked a card.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had to pay.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another player picked one.</p><p><br/></p><p>He collected money.</p><p><br/></p><p>Same board.</p><p><br/></p><p>Same dice.</p><p><br/></p><p>Different cards.</p><p><br/></p><p>Different outcomes.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody complained about fairness.</p><p><br/></p><p>They simply rolled again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came <strong>FREE PARKING</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi stopped.</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked at the space.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Nothing happens here.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Exactly.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes you land somewhere in life where nothing happens.</p><p><br/></p><p>No profit.</p><p><br/></p><p>No loss.</p><p><br/></p><p>No progress.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just waiting.</p><p><br/></p><p>And people often mistake that waiting for failure.</p><p><br/></p><p>But even Free Parking has a purpose.</p><p><br/></p><p>It gives you time to breathe.</p><p><br/></p><p>The game moved into its final stage.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde had houses.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya had strong properties.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kola had railroads.</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi had cash.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Femi made his biggest mistake.</p><p><br/></p><p>He wanted to catch up quickly.</p><p><br/></p><p>He bought a property he couldn't really afford.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then he built on it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was trying to become rich in one turn.</p><p><br/></p><p>It worked for a while.</p><p><br/></p><p>Until Maya landed there.</p><p><br/></p><p>**RENT.**</p><p><br/></p><p>Femi stared at the amount.</p><p><br/></p><p>He counted his money.</p><p><br/></p><p>Once.</p><p><br/></p><p>Twice.</p><p><br/></p><p>He was short.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Mortgage something,” Tunde said.</p><p><br/></p><p>He did.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still not enough.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Sell a house.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He did.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still not enough.</p><p><br/></p><p>Finally, Femi pushed his properties forward.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I’m bankrupt.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody spoke.</p><p><br/></p><p>The game had ended for him.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had started with the most cash.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had finished with nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde looked at the board.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then at the pile of properties.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then at the money in front of Maya.</p><p><br/></p><p>And suddenly, nobody was laughing anymore.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because they had all seen it.</p><p><br/></p><blockquote><strong>Monopoly was never really about money.</strong></blockquote><p><br/></p><p><em>It was about decisions.</em></p><p><br/></p><p>You can land on <strong>GO</strong> and still waste your opportunity.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can land on <strong>CHANCE</strong> and still make the wrong choice.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can go to <strong>JAIL</strong> and come back stronger.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can sit on <strong>FREE PARKING</strong> and think your life has stopped.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can own houses and hotels and still become bankrupt.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can have cash and still be poor.</p><p><br/></p><p>And you can lose one round without losing the whole game.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tunde packed the board.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya stopped him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Wait.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She pointed at the tiny <strong>GO</strong> square.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You know what I like about this game?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“What?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Everybody passes GO.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>“But nobody stays there.”</p><p><br/></p><p>And that was perhaps the biggest lesson of all.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Life keeps moving.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>You will pass GO.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will collect.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will lose.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will pay rent.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will take chances.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will go to Jail.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will get another chance.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will build.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will fall.</p><p><br/></p><p>You will mortgage something.</p><p><br/></p><p>You may even go bankrupt.</p><p><br/></p><p>But as long as the game is still running, <strong><em>you roll again.</em></strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Because sometimes winning isn't about owning the most.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes, it is simply about <strong><em>staying in the game long enough to make your next move.</em></strong></p><p><br/></p>
