Why—

JERRY: [interrupting] Well! Yesterday evening, We wanted to come have a talk and a pretty good time with you, so we came here. Meeting nobody, we thought you only stepped out for a moment, so we decided to wait and—

[He catches Jim's hard stare.]

Uhmm ..alright, not "we." All of it was my idea and I seem to regret it now because you made us sleep with panic in our hearts.

[Lifts his chin towards Cyrus]

So... that leaves you to answer us. Where were you?

CYRUS: I don't... owe you an explanation.

JIM: Okay

[brings out his phone, quickly takes a picture of Cyrus and puts it back in his pocket.]

CYRUS: What are you doing?

JIM: You should look at yourself in the mirror.

[Cyrus looks confused.]

If you don't, then it might interest you to discover that your trousers didn't conceal the bloodstains on them.

[Cyrus slowly looks down.]

And unless you've fabricated a way of explaining yourself to the school's management, you should start talking.

[Jerry looks at Cyrus' hands.]

JERRY: Your ... hands too.

[Cyrus looks down at his bloodied palms.]

JIM: Now explain why you were out all night, only to come back past four in the morning with a rough shirt, bloodstained hands and trousers.

Silence

We're listening.

[Cyrus looks from Jim to Jerry.]

CYRUS: [stammering] I... How?

JIM: Right here in the school premises?

CYRUS: No. Outside.

JERRY: So you walked into the kidnapping or were you teleported?

JIM: Jerry.

JERRY: I'm asking!

JIM: Let him talk.

[Cyrus takes another breath].

CYRUS: It all started last week, I was at a hospital a few miles away from the university.

JERRY: Doing what?

CYRUS: Just looking at the way things were done. Familiarizing myself with the place.

[He pauses.]

On my way out, I met this guy called Mensa at the gate. He claimed to also be a medical student. He told me he had a group of friends who needed someone to tutor them privately in some medical subjects... like Anatomy.

[Jerry shakes his head.]

JERRY: Didn't you ask him why he couldn't do it himself since he's also a medical student?

CYRUS: No, I didn't.

JIM: Why?

CYRUS: [looks away.] Especially when he mentioned the amount his friend was going to pay.

JERRY: How much?

CYRUS: Seventy Thousand Dren.

JERRY: [turns to Jim] In Naira... that'll be—

JIM: Naira and Dren are equivalent in value, Jerry.

[Looks back at Cyrus.]

Continue.

CYRUS: I really needed money so I agreed to tutor his friend, and we exchanged contacts.

[He pauses.]

Days passed without his call. I had already given up, thinking he'd found someone better.

Then he called me yesterday evening and asked if I could come right away.

JIM: And you agreed.

CYRUS: Yes.

JIM: Just like that?

[Cyrus nods.]

CYRUS: I left for the address he gave me.

JERRY: Alone?

CYRUS: Of course.

[Jerry closes his eyes and hits his forehead with his palm.]

[Cyrus continues]

CYRUS: I got there when it was already getting dark. I called Mensa again, and he told me a black car would pick me up.

[He swallows.]

Barely a minute after that call, I was attacked from behind...and everything went dark.

JERRY: Ah.

CYRUS: When I opened my eyes, I was in a room with dim lights. I was lying on the floor, weak and in pain. My spine felt like it had been bent for hours.

[He pauses]

There were three men around me and as my eyes adjusted, I recognized Mensa as one of them.

JIM: Mensa?

[Cyrus nods.]

CYRUS: He told one of the guys to call the boss.

[Sighs]

It appeared... it wasn't a tutorial... But an actual practical.

JERRY: What do you mean?

CYRUS: It was a trap.

Silence

Mensa was working for his boss—a man involved in the trafficking and sale of human vital organs.

[Jerry's face changes into a frown.]

They called him The Don.

JERRY: [gasps] What?

CYRUS: Then he came in with two guys, each carrying a dead body.

[He looks down.]

That's when I realized exactly what was happening.

JERRY: Wait... when you mean "practical," you mean he wanted you to... open... those dead bodies and—

[Cyrus nods.]

[stops]

Oh... my... goodness!

That was why they had to kidnap you. They didn't want you knowing the way to their hideout.

[He looks at Cyrus.]

Wait. Did you do it?

[Cyrus shakes his head.]

CYRUS: Fortunately, I got lucky.

[He pauses.]

While I was being threatened with a gun to my head, one of his men rushed in to deliver a message.

JIM: What message?

CYRUS: He mentioned a name and said—

"They're coming in mass."

[Jim's eyes narrow.]

JIM: Who?

CYRUS: I didn't catch the name but the boss immediately ordered everyone to evacuate.

JERRY: Why?

CYRUS: I realized later...

[He looks at them.]

Another gang was coming for them.

Silence

Mensa came to carry me out. Their men were getting ready to move.

[He pauses.]

Within minutes, a convoy of cars was already on the road.

JIM: And you were in one of them?

CYRUS: [nods] The fourth car.

Mensa was beside me, with two other men at the front—the driver and a hefty man beside him.

JERRY: Then what happened?

CYRUS: We didn't travel for long before we saw them.

JIM: The rival gang?

CYRUS: Yes. I heard a walkie-talkie speak in the car. That was the car in front alerting the others. In an instant, the cars ahead began swerving in different directions. Ours also went left until they all eventually parked and formed a semi-circle. Preparing for the approaching convoy.

JERRY: How many were they?

CYRUS: I managed to count fifteen.

[Sighs.]

Ours wasn't even up to ten.

CYRUS: The hefty man at the front pulled his pistol out and stepped out of the car.

Mensa ordered me to remain inside, cocked his gun, slid open the sunroof of the car and positioned himself.

JIM: Then?

CYRUS: Everything happened so quickly. Bullets started raining. I heard glass shatter everywhere. I scrambled and hid behind the driver's seat.

[He looks down.]

The driver was already dead.

Silence.

Minutes later, I heard a heavy thud inside the car.

Mensa had just been shot in the head.

He collapsed back into the car, and his head came right on my lap.

[Jim glances at Cyrus' bloodstained trousers.]

JIM: That explains the bloodstains?

[Cyrus nods.]

CYRUS: I realized my captors were losing.

[Exhales]

My panic increased. I just wanted to get out.

JERRY: So what did you do?

CYRUS: I pushed Mensa's body aside, opened the car door, and managed to creep out unnoticed.

JIM: You ran away unnoticed while the fight was still on?

CYRUS: I couldn't... I hid underneath the car.

[Jerry stares at him.]

That seemed—and later proved—to be the safest place at that moment, because the other gang visited every of the cars to kill anyone left... Even the boss was killed too— I heard him shout.

JERRY: So you waited under the car for how long?

CYRUS: Until I heard the rivals drive away.

Even then, I waited for about thirty minutes before I crawled out.

[Jerry slowly shakes his head in pity.]

JIM: So how did you find your way here?

CYRUS: I still cannot explain.

[Exhales]

I just kept moving, using only the streetlights as my direction, until I got to a familiar junction.

[Jim stares at him.]

JIM: What about your phone? Was it taken from you?

[Cyrus reaches into his pocket and brings it out.]

CYRUS: Here.

[He holds it up.]

I still have it.

[Jim frowns.]

JIM: But if you were kidnapped...

[He pauses.]

...how come you still have your phone?

Silence

And there's something else.

JERRY: What's that?

JIM: The school gate doesn't open until 6 a.m.

[Jim looks toward the door.

Then back at Cyrus.]

How were you able to get into the school premises at this hour...

[His eyes move down to Cyrus' bloodstained clothes.]

...with bloodstained hands and trousers?

[Cyrus' eyes dart from Jim to Jerry.]

Silence.

[Jerry slowly sits upright, Jim leans forward]

JIM: Cyrus?

[Cyrus says nothing]

We're listening.

CUT TO BLACK.
