He spots a student walking past.]

JIM: Bro! Abeg, wait. You don see Jerry? Did he pass here?

[The student shakes his head.]

Okay, thank you.

[He continues toward Jerry's room, muttering under his breath.]

JIM: Just be spoiling somebody's budget… [hisses] Let me just catch him inside that his room first.

[From the opposite end of the corridor, Jerry, about to step out of his room, spots Jim approaching. He freezes.]

JERRY: Ah.

[He quickly changes direction and slips back into his room.]

JIM: [from a distance] Baba, I don see you o! Better no hide.

[He reaches the door, jacks it open with force and jams it back.]

In Jerry's room, Room 223.

JERRY: [Pretending like nothing happened] Easy oh! I never clear the debt wey dey my head finish o, no add another one abeg. [ Straightens up.]

[grinning] Well, what brings the writer here? Na only advice I give o, I'm not a writer abeg. All I have is laptop and ermm—

JIM: [interrupts]. Jerry! Shut up and—

[He pauses, unable to say the word.]

JERRY: [chuckles] Give me my groundnuts? …Untop groundnuts?

[sighs.] Fine… I'm sorry I took it that way, but honestly, I didn't intend to—

JIM: [interrupts] You could have just asked! At all at all, we go share am! You didn't even bother to check whether I've eaten or not. You just—

JERRY: [interrupts] Took it and ate it?

JIM: Yes!

JERRY: Well, no! I didn't take it for myself. It was—

JIM: [interrupts] It doesn't change the fact that you stole—

[Pauses.]

Wait… You didn't take it for yourself?

JERRY: I just said that.

JIM: So what did you do with it? Sold it? Because you can start—

JERRY: [interrupts] I gave it to Cyrus!

[SILENCE.]

JIM: Cyrus?

JERRY: Yes, the one studying Medicine and Surgery.

[ANOTHER SILENCE.]

JERRY: See .... I ... [sighs] Okay, fine. About thirty minutes ago, Cyrus came to me. He was standing right where you are now… looking weak and—

JIM: [interrupts] Weak?

JERRY: [continues] He said he hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon.

[Jim's expression changes slightly.]

JERRY: I felt bad for him. So I gave him my last cup of gaari and told him to hold on.

JIM: You gave him your last gaari guy?

JERRY: Yeah and later your groundnuts. That's why I came to your room. I should have asked you first—or at least explained and I'm sorry.

[He looks at Jim.]

But you and I both know you'd have outrightly refused because of the beef between you two.

[LONGER SILENCE AS BOTH LOOK AT EACH OTHER.]

JIM: [sighs] Well… [shrugs] Sha I'm not heartless. If you had explained his predicament, I would have— [He waves his hand.] But it's fine. Na my own budget wey you spoil still dey pain me, but anyhow sha.

[He sits on Jerry's bed.]

[teasingly] Hope they're no bedbugs here o… ehn ehn.

[Jerry smiles as he picks his laptop to sit beside Jim.]

JERRY: Sha no vex....Omo ehn, the way students relate with their academic environment fascinates me a lot guy. Look at Cyrus, this guy has been in his room since yesterday afternoon, reading… with hunger. We're now on vacation oh! Omo ehn… We wey no read like Cyrus con be like olodo. Omo no man like Cyrus o. [Hisses]

JIM: [stifles a laugh] He no send you na... Well, I get your point sha. You know… the way we get on with studies differs because our approach to it also differs. Some found themselves studying what they are studying due to different reasons. A lot of things have happened to a lot of people to shape their path, mehn…

[Pauses] Hmm… and for some… ambition happened.

JERRY: Ambition? [pauses.] Hmm…how?

JIM: You see, these set of people are quite tough, not that others are weak o— let's not go into that for now. As I was saying, these people are usually super filled with unbending determination and passion striving against all odds, emphasis on "all odds". They see something they want and keep pushing no matter the circumstances and... Well, here they are fulfilling their ambition.

JERRY: Yeah, nice one… but some are really reckless and crazy with theirs though.

JIM: And Cyrus is a perfect example!

JERRY: [laughing] Ahn ahn… Guy…

JIM: Yes! I'm quick to point that out. If you like say it's because I have beef with him, na your problem. [hisses] No be only beef, na ogufe. Because tell me why— Oh my God, you know this guy na. Shebi you heard of the time he offered to bribe a lecturer because he missed a test?

JERRY: [laughs] Be like say e guide that time. Funds don finish now.

JIM: Like for real, guy! If not for the fact that his father, despite being an influential figure, travelled down here to beg the management, he would have been expelled rather than the two weeks suspension he was later given. Imagine, mudding your reputation because of marks. To what end? Doctor indeed. [Hisses.]

JERRY: Does that still look like ambition sef?

JIM: I wonder o. You see, it's not a crime to work towards your ambition. But it becomes dangerous when you become AMBITIOUS, there's a difference between having ambition and becoming ambitious. At that point, you stop pursuing your ambition with determination but rather with desperation.

JERRY: Now this is making me suspect Cyrus. What exactly is he after? Because becoming a doctor is a career goal. That's not necessarily an ambition.

JIM: Exactly.

[A brief silence.]

JERRY: So what's his ambition?

JIM: [shrugs] That's what I don't know.

[They exchange a look.]

And frankly, that's not mine to figure out abeg o.

[Pauses.]

Hmm… Listen to another thing, you know, even while pursuing your ambition, you have to balance it with your social life and all others. But the moment you become ambitious, you lose CONTROL of that balance and you end up being CONTROLLED by the ambition.

JERRY: Hm! Ride on Papa! [chuckles] Wait first… I don't understand again o. Is it that you're delivering a motivational speech or what, because this one that—

JIM: [interrupts] Shut your lips and learn boy!

[stands, facing Jerry, he clears his throat.]

So, in conclusion, my dear student, SET yourself an ambition and BE ON FIRE with it, but make sure you don't SET YOURSELF ON FIRE by becoming ambitious.

[Bows]

My pleasure.

JERRY: Hee! The man! The legend! The myth! Thank you, Papa! Ah Papa bless me!😂🤲

[Jerry rises up and starts to clap.]

JIM: [shakes his head] Hm hm! Don't mention oo—

BOTH: We don't do that here!

[Laughter.]

JERRY: E remain small, my laptop for fall.

JIM: [pretending] Which laptop?

[Pause.]

[Smiling] Oh… the one wey dey on top your lap.

JERRY: [Laughs] Oya na, Lines na water. Assuming you push this same energy into that your poem, will it not be better? You dey hail Africa you mention hamburger. [laughs] Which time you chop am last?

JIM: [smiling, he hisses] Comot here abeg. Now, speaking of "chop", I still never chop because of your light fingers. And I wan drink gaari with that groundnut before o.

JERRY:[grins] Don't worry, I've texted my Dad, so by this time tomorrow… you know. [winks] I'll compensate you, no worry, but for now, hunger is—

[Pause]

[Muttering]Wait… I took the groundnuts… you weren't able to drink the gari… that means…[suddenly smiling] Oh, don't worry.

[He proceeds to leave the room.]

JIM: Guy! Where are you going to all of a sudden?

JERRY: Uhmm… er… I... er… toilet...yes... I want to use the toilet.

JIM: Since when did you start using the hostel toilet?

JERRY: Uhmm… just… you know [shrugs]… checking it out.

[Jerry suddenly bolts through the door.]

JIM: Guy! The toilet is to the right! Why did you go left? You this guy—

[pauses] Wait…

[His eyes widen.]

Jerry! That's the way to my room!

[He jumps up and runs after him.]

Jerry! Nothing must happen to that gaari o!

[FROM OUTSIDE]

Jerry Oya wait! We'll share it!.....Oh God, why are you like this.......ARRRGH! JEEEERRY!!!
