SACRED THINGS SHAMEFUL THINGS: TO ALL THE THINGS WE COULD HAVE BEEN

Have you ever wondered what we would be like if we were completely different people?

Well not different, if we were raised differently.

I believe we have infinite versions of ourselves.

And by infinite versions I mean possibilities.

And those versions are what we would could have been.

The versions of ourselves we never met.

The versions we never got to see.

And I don't mean if my dad was Elon musk or Dangote.

Or if I wasn't born a Nigerian.

I mean if our parents had brought us up differently.

If they had invested and shown interest in our silly dreams.

If they had believed us over that stranger.

If they had married different people.

If they'd raised us in different places.

If they hadn't shamed us for doing what we loved.

If they hadn't told us to stop writing or drawing because school was more important and writers or artists didn't become successful people in life.

If they hadn't influenced or chosen our careers for us because they believed they knew better and studying English was a waste of 5 years.

If they hadn't shamed us for our choice of outfits and called us sluts, prostitutes, and rogues.

If they hadn't told us to stop singing or listening to music because it was demonic.

If they hadn't wrapped our mistakes and our questions around heaven and hell.

If they had just allowed their children be children without having to choose how their lives should go.

Perhaps from an early age we learnt our needs didn't matter so we never bothered asking for help now we're independent in "nature".

Did we abandon our dreams because we lost interest maybe, but it could also be that we got tired of being shamed or beaten just because we had dreams.

I wonder how many of us are waking around with the baggage of the talents and interests we never discovered.

Or the dreams we no longer remember having.

Who would we be if they hadn't killed our creativity and interfered with the process of us becoming our own people?

Would we still be the same, just slightly better?

Or just the same 🙂.
