Small stories, big health lessons (episode ten)

The Missed dose

The Missed dose

It was a quiet Saturday evening. Uncle Kola was sitting at the dinning table, working on his laptop. He was beginning to feel much better after a few days of illness, and things were slowly returning to normal.

Then, suddenly, he paused.

“Oh, no! God!”

Fati, who was watching TV in the living room, turned back.

“Uncle, what is it? Is everything alright?”

“I forgot to take my afternoon medicine! And I told myself I'll complete the course this time around, but here I am forgetting a dose."

“Oh? What medicine is that, Uncle?”

“One of my antibiotics. It's the only afternoon dose and I was supposed to take it earlier, but I completely forgot. And now it is almost time for my evening dose.”

Fati looked at him.

“Oh, Uncle. That is not good. What are you going to do now?”

Uncle Kola leaned back in his chair.

“Well, I do not know. I suppose I will just take the afternoon dose together with my night dose. That should work.....right?”

“No, Uncle! You cannot do that.”

“But why not? I have already missed the afternoon dose, and I still have to take my night dose. What exactly do you expect me to do?”

Fati smiled.

“Uncle, let me ask you something. Imagine you were supposed to board a bus at 1 p.m., but you missed it. Your next bus is at 8 p.m. When you get to the park at 8 p.m., can you board both the 1 p.m. bus and the 8 p.m. bus together?”

Uncle Kola laughed.

“Of course not! The 1 p.m. bus has already left.”

“Exactly! So why would you take two doses together simply because you missed one?

“Oh, really? I never thought of it that way. All right, Fatima, my dear pharmacist. What are we going to do now?”

“First, let me see the medicine pack.”

"Hmm. Let me go and get it."

Uncle Kola comes back with the pack and hands it to Fati.

Fati examined the medication and checked its instructions.

“Uncle, the right thing to do when you miss a dose depends on the particular medicine and how close you are to your next scheduled dose. You should never assume that you can make up for a missed dose by taking twice as much later. For this medicine, since your next dose is already due soon, we need to follow the instructions for this medicine or ask a pharmacist, rather than take both doses together."

Uncle Kola nodded.

“I see. So I should not just decide these things myself?”

“Yes, Uncle. Taking more than the prescribed dose can expose you to excessive drug concentrations and potentially serious adverse effects or toxicity. And when medicines are not taken as prescribed, they may also fail to produce the desired therapeutic effect, and result in treatment failure."

“Oh, I understand now. I could have caused myself more problems while trying to make up for one missed dose!”

“Precisely!”

Fati paused, then added:

“One more thing, Uncle. You see, because this medicine is an antibiotic, there is another important issue we should talk about.”

“Really? What is it?”

“Antimicrobial resistance. Antibiotics are medicines used to treat bacterial infections, but bacteria can develop resistance to them. When antibiotics are used inappropriately, including incorrect dosing, it can contribute to the development and spread of resistant bacteria. This means that some antibiotics may eventually become less effective against infections they were once able to treat.”

Uncle Kola looked concerned.

“So using antibiotics carelessly can make treating infections more difficult?”

“Mhmm. That is why antibiotics should always be used according to the prescription. Do not change your dose, share your antibiotics with someone else, or use leftover antibiotics without professional advice. And always make sure you complete your course, unless otherwise advised by your health care provider."

Uncle Kola smiled.

“Thank you, Fatima. I think I have learnt two important lessons today.”

“And what are those, Uncle?”

“First, never to take an extra dose just because I missed an earlier one. Second, I should use antibiotics responsibly.

Fati laughed.

“Now you are learning, Uncle!”

"That's my niece," Uncle Kola said as he patted her head.

And just like that, one forgotten dose became an important lesson in medication safety.

🌿 Important health lessons:

• Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional.

• Taking more than the prescribed dose can cause serious adverse effects or toxicity, while incorrect or inconsistent use may result in therapeutic failure.

• Antibiotics should always be used exactly as prescribed. Inappropriate antibiotic use contributes to antimicrobial resistance, making infections increasingly difficult to treat.

This is not medical advice; it is intended for health education and awareness. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for guidance.

Until next time, stay healthy and stay curious 🌿
