A Dead Man's Morning

Have you ever woken up one morning and realised that something was wrong, but you couldn't figure out what it was?

No?

Well, I have

And the most annoying part is that I was the last person to find out

Let me explain

It was a Tuesday morning. I woke up around 7:15 a.m., stretched my body, picked up my phone, and checked the time

Three missed calls from my mother

Five missed calls from my best friend

Seven missed calls from an unknown number

And 46 WhatsApp messages

I stared at my phone

Who died? ๐ญ

I hadn't even brushed my teeth, and people were already holding a conference in my notification bar

I ignored the messages and went outside to buy bread

That was when the first strange thing happened

My neighbour, Mama Chinedu, was standing in front of her house

Normally, this woman could see you carrying a bag of rice and still ask you to help her lift a bucket of water

But that morning, the moment she saw me, she froze

Her eyes widened

She covered her mouth

Then she whispered, "Jesus!"

I stopped walking

"Mama, good morning o."

She didn't answer

Instead, tears began rolling down her cheeks

I looked behind me

Nobody

I looked to my left

A wall

I looked to my right

Another wall

I turned back to face her

"Mama, abeg, who died?"

She shook her head slowly

"My son..."

I swallowed

"Yes, Mama?"

"May your soul rest in peace"ย

I nearly removed my slippers and used them to reset her brain

"MAMA! I'M STANDING IN FRONT OF YOU!"

She screamed

I screamed

A small boy passing by dropped his bread and ran

At that point, I decided that whatever was happening in that compound was beyond my salary

I continued to the shop

When I got there, the shopkeeper looked at me, sighed deeply, and handed me a loaf of bread

"Take it."

I checked my pocket

How much?

Nothing.

I stared at him

"Uncle, I said how much?"

He wiped his face with his shirt

"My brother, please. Let me do this little thing for you."

I looked at the bread

Then at him

Then at the bread again

In Nigeria, even when you owe someone โฆ50, they can remember it during prayer

And this man was giving me free bread without an explanation?

Something was seriously wrong

I collected the bread

Not because I understood the situation, but because I was confused, not foolish

As I turned to leave, I heard him whisper to another customer

"Poor young man. He doesn't even know."

I stopped

I turned around

Know WHAT?

Both men suddenly became interested in a packet of biscuits

I left the shop with my free bread and a mind full of questions

On my way home, I met my best friend, Tunde

The same Tunde who once borrowed my โฆ2,000 and spent three months avoiding my calls

The same Tunde who could see me approaching from a distance and suddenly develop an urgent interest in the sky

But that morning, he saw me and started running

"TUNDE!"

He ran faster

"TUNDE, WAIT!"

He increased his speed

I chased him for a few seconds before my body reminded me that I wasn't training for the Olympics

Finally, he stopped

He turned around, breathing heavily

I pointed at him

"Guy, wetin happen? Why everybody dey behave like say I get disease?"

Tunde stared at me

His lips trembled

Then he said something that made the free bread in my hand feel like the least of my problems

Guy... you mean you don't know?

"Know wetin?"

He brought out his phone

Opened Facebook

Searched for something

Then he turned the screen towards me

And there, in bold letters, was a post from MY OWN FACEBOOK ACCOUNT

The post had been published at exactly 2:03 a.m

It read

IT IS WITH A HEAVY HEART THAT I ANNOUNCE MY OWN PASSING. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU ALL. PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR EVERYTHING. REST IN PEACE TO ME.

Below the post were 3,847 comments

I read it once

Twice

Three times

Then I checked the profile picture

My face

I checked the name

My name

I checked the account

My account

I looked at Tunde

He looked at me

I looked at the phone again

Then I asked the only reasonable question my brain could produce

"Tunde..."

"Guy?"

"WHO POSTED THIS THING?"

He swallowed

"Your account, na"ย

I grabbed his shirt

MY ACCOUNT IS NOT A HUMAN BEING! WHO HELD THE PHONE?

He didn't answer

I snatched the phone and scrolled through the comments

People were already mourning me

Someone wrote, "You left us too soon, brother"

Another person wrote, "You were such a kind soul"

One aunty I had never met in my life commented, "Sleep well, my son."

Sleep well?

I was standing outside under the hot Nigerian sun, sweating like a student who had just remembered an assignment was due that morning

Then I saw a comment from someone I knew

My own younger brother

"Rest well, big bro. Don't touch anything in my room"

Silence

Then he asked

"Wait..."

His voice dropped

"Bro, is that you?"

I closed my eyes

"NO, NA MY GHOST! WHO ELSE YOU EXPECT?"

He screamed and ended the call

I stared at my phone for five full seconds

Then I opened my Facebook account and typed

"EVERYBODY CALM DOWN. I AM ALIVE."

Before I could post it, a new notification appeared

Someone had tagged me in another post

The caption read:

"THE FINAL MOMENTS OF OUR DEARLY DEPARTED BROTHER. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE."

I tapped the video

And what I saw made my entire body go cold

Because the person in that video...

Looked exactly like me

And I knew for a fact that I had never recorded it

TO BE CONTINUED...
