The Firstborn's Slient Tears

THE FIRSTBORN'S SILENT TEARS 💔🥺

Sometimes, I wish I wasn't the firstborn.

Not because I don't love my family, but because I'm tired. Tired of being strong when all I want to do is cry. Tired of being the one everyone runs to whenever they need something, but having nobody to run to when I need help.

My name is Blessing, and I'm the first child in my family.

Growing up, I always heard people say that being the firstborn was a blessing. They said I would be a leader, a role model, and someone my younger siblings would look up to.

But nobody told me that being the firstborn could also mean carrying responsibilities that sometimes feel too heavy for my age.

I became the understanding daughter.

Whenever my parents couldn't afford something I needed, I was told to manage. Whenever my younger siblings needed something, I was expected to help. And whenever I complained, I heard the same words.

"Blessing, you're the eldest. You should understand."

Honestly, I've heard those words so many times that sometimes I wonder if being born first means I'm no longer allowed to have problems of my own.

I remember one particular evening when I had only a little money left in my account. I hadn't eaten properly that day, and I was already thinking about how I would survive until the end of the week.

Then my younger brother called.

"Big sis, please, can you send me some money? I need to buy food."

I looked at my account balance and sighed.

That was almost all the money I had left.

But he was my brother, and I couldn't bear the thought of him going hungry when I could help.

So, I sent it.

After the transfer, I sat on my bed, staring at my phone. I wanted to cry, but I didn't even know whether I was crying because I was hungry, frustrated, or simply tired of always having to sacrifice.

The painful part was that nobody had asked if I had eaten.

Nobody had asked how much money I had left.

Nobody even knew that I was struggling.

And somehow, I was expected to keep going as if everything was fine.

Sometimes, I envy my younger siblings.

They can ask Mummy and Daddy for things without feeling guilty. They can complain when they're unhappy. They can admit when they're tired.

But me?

I have to think twice before asking for anything because I don't want to be seen as ungrateful.

Whenever I need something, I remind myself that my parents have other children to take care of. I tell myself to be patient. I convince myself that things will get better.

But sometimes, I wish someone would remember that I am also their child.

I wish someone would look at me and say, "Blessing, I know you always try your best, but you don't have to do everything alone."

You have no idea how much those words would mean to me.

The truth is, sometimes I don't even need money. I just need someone to ask how I'm doing and genuinely care about the answer.

I need someone to notice when my smile isn't real.

I need someone to realise that when I say, "I'm fine," it doesn't always mean I am.

There are nights when I lie on my bed thinking about my future, my responsibilities, and all the things I still need to achieve. I worry about my own life while wondering how I can continue helping everyone else.

Sometimes, I cry quietly because I don't want anyone to hear me.

And after crying, I wipe my face, pick up my phone, and continue replying to messages as if nothing happened.

Because tomorrow, someone will still need me.

My siblings will still call.

My parents will still expect me to understand.

And I will probably say, "It's okay," even when it isn't.

But do you know what hurts the most?

It's not the sacrifices themselves.

It's feeling like those sacrifices have become something everyone expects from me.

As if I don't get tired.

As if I don't have dreams of my own.

As if being the firstborn automatically means I must always put myself last.

Sometimes, I wonder whether my family would notice how much I've been carrying if, for once, I stopped pretending to be strong.

Would anyone ask what was wrong?

Would anyone notice my silence?

Or would they simply say, "Blessing has changed"?

I don't know.

But one thing I know is that I love my family deeply. I would never wish suffering on the people I love.

I just wish loving them didn't sometimes feel like forgetting myself.

I'm still learning that I can be a good daughter without solving every problem. I can be a loving sister without giving what I don't have. I can care about my family and still admit that I need care too.

And maybe one day, I will no longer feel guilty for choosing myself sometimes.

Until then, I'm learning to take things one day at a time.

To the firstborn who cries when nobody is watching, the one who keeps saying "I'm fine" because they don't want to worry anyone, and the one who feels guilty for needing help:

I hope life becomes gentler with you.

I hope someone remembers to check on you, too.

And I hope you understand that you don't have to break yourself just to prove that you love your family.

Because beneath the title of "firstborn," you're still somebody's child. You deserve to be loved, supported, understood, and cared for, too. ❤️‍🩹

If you're a firstborn, tell me honestly: have you ever felt like you had to be strong for everybody, even when you were breaking inside?
