What the Cup Knows

What happens when you’re always the one holding, never the one held.

You learn to hold. That’s the first lesson how to take in what everyone hands you, a little from this person, a little from that one, until you’re full of things you never asked for and still reaching for more because that’s what you’re for, isn’t it?

To hold. To be useful. So you stay quiet about the weight. You don’t speak while you’re filling up, because speaking might mean someone stops pouring, and somewhere along the way you confused being needed with being loved.

But nothing holds forever without a seam giving way. And when it does, it doesn’t come out as words it comes out as blood, because you never gave it the chance to come out as anything else.

You bled instead of spoke. You leaked instead of asked for less.

they only see the cup,

not what fills it

they see hands reaching in

and call it purpose.

no one asks if it’s too much,

no one checks the seam,

they just keep pouring

and call your silence clean.

I am to be used

yes, that much is true.

but useful was never

a license to run through.

being needed is not

the same as being seen.

you can hold me

and still miss everything.

That’s the part people skip past they see the use in you and mistake it for the whole of you.

They don’t see what it costs to keep holding, keep absorbing, keep saying nothing while you’re already past full.

And being made to be used doesn’t mean you were made to be used carelessly.

There’s a difference between being reached for and being drained. One asks. The other just takes, and calls it normal because you never said stop.

“Artwork by @fatama_alabbasi”
