Forced respect
<p>African parenting sometimes teaches obedience better than communication.</p><p><br/></p><p>It’s completely okay for parents to want respect from their children. But sometimes, the way African parents demand respect leaves very little room for communication.</p><p><br/></p><p>And this doesn’t only affect the relationship between parents and their children. It can slowly affect the child’s confidence and enthusiasm too.</p><p><br/></p><p>Take me, for example.</p><p><br/></p><p>I never really had social anxiety while growing up, but constantly being shut down and being told that my opinion didn’t matter made me start questioning everything I had to say.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nowadays, I’m less quiet than I used to be, but I’m still more likely to entertain other people’s opinions than my own, even when it comes to my own life.</p><p><br/></p><p>And this thirst for constant respect and obedience is especially common with fathers.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some fathers see their role as providing financially, but being a support system for your children goes beyond money. If there’s no bond, communication, or constant encouragement, what exactly is holding that relationship together?</p><p><br/></p><p>It can even get to the point where a child automatically assumes that any adult who says or does something contrary to what they believe must be right, simply because they grew up being taught that adults always have the final say.</p><p><br/></p><p>Parents need to understand that building a connection with your children doesn’t make you less of an authority.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can be respected without making your child feel unheard.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can correct your child without making them afraid to speak.</p><p><br/></p><p>And sometimes, choosing connection over constantly proving that you’re the parent might be one of the best things you can do for both yourself and your child. 🤷🏽♀️</p><p><br/></p><p><a class="tc-blue" href="https://twocents.space/insights/tag/trauma">#trauma</a> <a class="tc-blue" href="https://twocents.space/insights/tag/controlling">#controlling</a> guardians </p>
