How To Prepare Akara
<p><span style="background-color: transparent;"><em><strong>A masterclass in why having the ingredients has never been the same thing as knowing how to cook.</strong></em></span></p><p><br/></p><p>Welcome to today's episode. I'm your able host, <strong>Big Dee.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>But today, you can call me <strong>Chef Dee.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong>The Ingredients</strong></p><p>- 2 cups peeled brown beans</p><p>- 1 medium-sized red onion, finely chopped</p><p>- 2–3 fresh Scotch bonnet peppers, chopped or blended</p><p>- Salt and seasoning to taste</p><p>- Water</p><p>- Vegetable oil</p><p><br/></p><p>You mix everything together and fry.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then you have your akara.</p><p><br/></p><p>Easy.</p><p><br/></p><p>Except... no.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because somewhere between the beans and the akara, a lot can go wrong.</p><p><br/></p><p>How much water?</p><p><br/></p><p>How smooth should the beans be?</p><p><br/></p><p>How hot should the oil be?</p><p><br/></p><p>What happens when the batter is too thick?</p><p><br/></p><p>What happens when it is too watery?</p><p><br/></p><p>How do you know the oil is ready without standing there with a thermometer?</p><p><br/></p><p>And how do you beat the batter well enough to make the akara light and fluffy instead of dense and heavy?</p><p><br/></p><p>None of that was in my recipe.</p><p><br/></p><p>Yet I gave you the ingredients.</p><p><br/></p><p>You had everything you needed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Or so it seemed.</p><p><br/></p><p>That is the funny thing about having resources.</p><p><br/></p><p>From the outside, it can look like someone has been given everything.</p><p><br/></p><p>The money is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>The platform is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>The opportunity is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>The education is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>The connection is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>The idea is there.</p><p><br/></p><p>So when things don't work out, we ask, "But what happened? They had everything."</p><p><br/></p><p>Maybe they did.</p><p><br/></p><p>But having the ingredients has never been the same thing as knowing how to cook.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone can hand you an opportunity and you can still waste it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone can give you money and you can still lose it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone can open a door for you and you can still walk through it without knowing where you're going.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone can give you a brilliant idea and you can still have no idea what to do with it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Resources matter. Of course they do.</p><p><br/></p><p>But resources without the ability to manage them are just ingredients sitting on a kitchen counter.</p><p><br/></p><p>And eventually, beans go bad.</p><p><br/></p><p>The opportunity expires.</p><p><br/></p><p>The money disappears.</p><p><br/></p><p>The platform becomes silent.</p><p><br/></p><p>The idea gathers dust.</p><p><br/></p><p>The ingredients were never the problem.</p><p><br/></p><p>You just needed to learn how to cook.</p>
