Pretty privilege isn’t a personality

“This girl looks so attractive. I think she must be a very nice person.”

Why does that thought come so naturally to some of us? Why do we unconsciously associate someone’s appearance with their morality, personality, or even the kind of person they are?

We live in a society that places so much value on appearance that we sometimes treat beauty as an indication of goodness. We are more likely to approach someone who fits the standards society has created for us, listen to them, trust them, or even assume they have better qualities simply because they are attractive.

But when did appearance become a one-way ticket to moral decency?

A beautiful face does not automatically mean a beautiful character, just as someone who doesn’t fit conventional beauty standards is not any less worthy of kindness, respect, or attention. We often make assumptions about people before they have even had the chance to show us who they truly are.

Perhaps we need to remind ourselves that appearance is only one small part of a person. Character is built through actions, values, kindness, integrity, and the way we treat others— not through facial features, body shape, skin, or how closely we fit a standard of beauty.

At the end of the day, all bodies are equally human. Everyone has something unique about them, something that makes them worthy of being seen beyond their appearance.

Beauty can catch our attention, but it should never determine the value we place on someone’s humanity.
