The Ropes of Consistency

You know that person.

You wake up on Monday, they are there.

Tuesday.....Wednesday...

They are still there..

And at some point, you just look at this person and think,

“Don't you get tired?” 😭

Like, how are you still doing this?

How have you been showing up for this long?

Meanwhile, you are in your own corner trying to keep your own thing alive, and even two weeks is beginning to look like a marathon. 😂

You started that thing with so much excitement.

Day one? Fire.

Day three? Still good.

One month later...

“God, give me strength.”

So how do some people keep showing up?

How do they make it look so normal?

How do they keep doing the same thing over and over without it feeling like punishment...

Come, let’s gist. ☕️

Consistency looks very easy when you are looking at the finished product.

You see someone showing up every week.

Posting, Writing, Creating, Building.

Doing the thing again and again.

And you think, “Wow. This person must have some serious discipline.”

Maybe.

But there are a few things happening behind the scenes too.

Rule number one: You have to be hungry.

And I know. I know.

You have heard this “you need to be passionate” talk a thousand times but have you ever been really hungry before?

That kind of hunger where food becomes the only thing on your mind?

Exactly.

That is how hungry you have to be for the thing you are trying to build.

You have to genuinely want it and enjoy it.

When you love what you are doing, showing up doesn't always feel like punishment.

You may get tired..

You may have days where you don't feel like doing anything.

But somewhere inside you, there is still that thing saying,

“I want this.”

That hunger matters.

Rule number two: Prepare before you need to perform.

I am not an impromptu person. 😂

You cannot just call me and say,

“Princess, we need to be somewhere tomorrow.”

Tomorrow where?

Who is going?

What are we doing?

What time?

I need information. 😭

I love having things planned.

I like knowing what my week looks like.

Sometimes even three days ahead is enough for me to arrange my head.

And that same thing applies to consistency.

You cannot always depend on inspiration to show up.

Sometimes, you need to prepare while you are still inspired.

Have an idea?

Write it down.

A thought comes to you in class?

Write it down.

You suddenly think of something you want to post next week?

Write it down.

Your Notes app can save your life, please.

The problem is not that you don't have ideas.

You have plenty but you didn't capture them.

So plan.

Pre-plan.

Prepare.

Planalyze. 😂

Whatever you want to call it, put things on the ground before the pressure comes.

Rule number three: Your calendar is not decoration.

Please...Your calendar is your friend...Use it.

If something matters to you, give it a place.

I already have things on my calendar for this month.

My sign-out...

Booked.

My exams...

Booked.

Events..

Booked.

Things I want to work on...

Booked.

If I know I have an exam by 8 a.m., I already know that particular time belongs to that exam.

If I know I have somewhere to be on Saturday, I put it there.

Because when you look at your calendar, you don't have to start wondering,

“What was I supposed to do today?”

You already know.

And that makes consistency easier because you are not constantly negotiating with yourself.

Rule number four: Get help.

People don't talk about it enough.

Sometimes you look at someone and say,

“Ah! This person is so consistent!”

Meanwhile, there are people behind the scenes.

An editor, A PA, A designer.

A friend who helps with ideas.

Someone who reviews their work.

Someone they can call when they are stuck.

Please, don't romanticise doing everything alone.

If you don't have the capacity to employ help, seek help.

Ask questions.

Ask someone you admire,

“What do you think I'm doing wrong?”

“Can you look at this?”

“How would you approach this?”

“Do you know a better way to do this?”

Seek advice, knowledge and people.

You are not an island.

Sometimes, the difference between being stuck and moving forward is simply asking someone for help.

Rule number five: Think long-term.

This one is very important.

If you are doing something you genuinely want to build, stop expecting everything to make sense tomorrow.

Give yourself two years.

Three years.

Four years.

Look at where you could be if you kept showing up.

A seed doesn't become a tree because you planted it yesterday.

You water it, You wait.

You keep caring for it.

You give it time.

That is how some things work.

And finally...

Rule number six: Consistency is allowed to wobble.

Some days, you will not feel like doing it.

Some days, you will miss a day.

Some days, life will happen.

You will get tired.

You will have exams.

You will have family issues.

You will have days where your brain simply says, “Abeg, leave me.” 😂

And that's okay.

What matters is what happens next.

Don't say,

“I missed yesterday, so I have ruined everything.”

No.

Pick it back up.

Continue.

Continue.

Continue.

Continue.

Until showing up becomes part of who you are.

We have about three months left in the year.

And maybe you've been looking at everything you haven't done yet...Maybe you think you've wasted too much time.

Maybe you think it's too late to start.

It isn't.

You are still in process.

Start.

Prepare.

Schedule.

Ask for help.

Think long-term.

And keep going.

Those are the ropes of consistency.

Don't worry.

Don't thank me.

Thank me with a tip. 😂☕️
