The Sins of Pastor Timothy

Claire Adedotun had thought she knew her husband perfectly. For ten years, she studied his allergies, his moods, his favourite and worst football clubs, his favourite foreign meals, his best Bible verses, and even the crazy way he arranged his books in his office. She knew everything by heart.

There was a popular saying: “No one is perfect.” To her, Timothy was. She saw that perfection whenever he smiled, approached the pulpit, or talked passionately about Christ and His kingdom to the congregation.

She loved Timothy with all her heart.

Unlike couples who constantly needed reassurance, Claire and Timothy never questioned the love they shared. It was obvious to everyone, and to themselves, that they adored each other.

She knew she had hit the jackpot when she married him. He was handsome, charming, caring, funny, and God-fearing: the five qualities she had always wanted in a man.

He was a youth pastor when she met him in 2008. At first, she didn’t like the idea of being romantically linked to a pastor. It felt like too much control and too many restrictions; her friends constantly warned her. But she soon realised he was much more than just “the youth pastor.” He was a charmer, and she was a sucker for it.

Over the years, she adjusted her lifestyle to fit his. She got rid of the vape pens, the loud skimpy outfits, and the extravagant life she once lived. She left it all behind and became Pastor Mrs. Adedotun.

At first, it was tough. In the early years of their marriage, the parish elders criticised her repeatedly. They thought her skirts were too tight, her blouses showed too much cleavage, her makeup was too heavy, and that she didn’t bow low enough when greeting them. She couldn’t do anything without the elders whispering among themselves and clearing their throats disapprovingly.

“Sometimes, it can be draining,” she remembered telling her mother years ago when she felt like giving up. It was one church meeting after another, members calling at unreasonable hours of the night claiming spiritual attacks in their sleep, organising endless church events, and enduring constant gossip in the church.

Years ago, after a fight with the assistant pastor’s wife, Claire swore she would never return to the parish. But three days later, she reconsidered, thinking, What will everyone say if I am not involved in the church like my husband is? She felt forced to uphold the image people had of a pastor’s wife, even though she sometimes loathed it. This was not the life she had wanted, but in marriage, she was always told that “adjustment is key.”

As a young adult, she had dreamt of running for political office, a dream she still pondered after marriage. But her father had shut it down, saying, “Your husband’s home is your place, not the Senate or anywhere else. With the corrupt lifestyles politicians have, how could you support your husband in the church?” So, she abandoned her dream, focused on raising her two children, and embraced Timothy and the new life he had given her.

She supported him fiercely, and he deserved it, or so she thought. He had no family apart from her, and she wanted to be the anchor he could always count on.

However, when horrifying stories began to surface in 2018, she started to wonder if he was truly the man she had married. 2018 was supposed to be their year of turnaround, but the accusations made for a tragic start. On January 21st, news broke that her husband was involved with a teenager.

Timothy wasn't one to address rumours; he dismissed the accusers as “clout-chasers, busybodies, and jobless people.”

When she tried to talk to him about it, he simply asked, “Why would I mess around with a child when I have a queen at home? It makes no sense.” That day, she chose to believe him and stand by him. After all, that was a wife’s duty. Besides, the accusation sounded absurd: Timothy with a minor? Impossible.

As weeks passed, more stories emerged, slowly dismantling her trust in him. There were reports of her husband touching young girls, fondling minors, and sleeping with women—all under the guise of “deliverance.”

The scandal grew rapidly, destroying her faith in her husband and ruining her social life. Friends stopped inviting her out, and her phone went silent. Attendance at their church plummeted as members offered flimsy excuses for missing services. Everyone had turned their backs on them.

The rumours quickly migrated to social media, where people unleashed harsh criticisms against Timothy. One sleepless night, Claire scrolled through Twitter, where the scandal had exploded. Users called her awful names, insulted her, and blamed her for enabling sexual violence.

“She’s a woman, and she won’t believe her husband raped that little girl, Zainab?”

“Hmm, don’t judge her yet. You never know if it’s all lies.”

“What reason would a 10-year-old have to lie?”

“She isn’t a woman; she is a monster of evil, right along with her husband.”

Eventually, the couple temporarily closed the church until the storm blew over. Claire stayed indoors with her children, watching online services because she was too ashamed to attend another church.

Timothy, however, seemed unfazed. He attended services at other churches, drove around town singing gospel music at the top of his lungs, and maintained his routine of posting Bible verses on his WhatsApp status every morning.

He kept his head high, though Claire knew this was not the time for bravado. He should have kept a low profile and hoped the story would die down.

She stared at him every time he returned home, wondering if he had been out with another woman. Yet a quiet voice kept telling her, Trust your husband. He is a pastor. A pastor would never do that. She reasoned that God was testing them, using this trial to refine their marriage. She prayed earnestly for revelation and truth.

Two months after closing the church, they were invited to her cousin’s wedding. At the reception, her husband put on a broad smile, greeting everyone—even those who acknowledged him only out of obligation. Ever since the stories broke, Claire viewed him differently; she couldn’t even be intimate with him without thinking about those children. She hated herself for feeling that way.

Then she noticed something unusual: her estranged sister, Laide, was at the party with her boyfriend. Laide had avoided family gatherings for years. Claire noticed the discomfort on Laide’s face whenever Timothy spoke to her or her boyfriend; disgust was written all over it.

Call it intuition, but Claire felt a deep, sickening knot in her stomach. She began to fear what her husband might have done to her sister. It was an intuition far heavier than the rumours she had been reading online.

Laide had long been considered the family's black sheep. She had gotten pregnant at twenty, had an abortion that infuriated their parents, and left home at twenty-two to live with her boyfriend, Wale.

After the pregnancy, her relationship with Claire had fractured. Laide, who used to rely on Claire, stopped speaking to her and stopped visiting the children. Over time, Claire had grown tired of trying to mend the rift and let it go.

Now, Claire needed answers. She had a terrible feeling that Laide’s exile from the family was linked to Timothy.

The morning after the wedding, after dropping her kids at school, Claire drove to FESTAC to get the truth. Claire stood at Laide’s doorstep, sweaty palms and a nervous wreck. She had rehearsed her words in the car to avoid triggering her sister’s volatile temper.

Laide invited her in and offered her water, but remained silent.

“Laide, I need to speak to you,” Claire said, bracing herself.

“About what?” Laide replied instantly, her swiftness catching Claire off guard.

“About you and Timothy,” Claire said, taking a breath. “I saw how uncomfortable you were around him yesterday. What’s going on? Kilode?“

Laide narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Why are you so afraid of him?” Claire demanded.

“Why now?” Laide asked bitterly. “Because stories are coming out about him being a rapist; now you want answers?”

“I just need to know,” Claire pleaded, her eyes desperate. “Will you tell me or not? Please.”

“Why should I tell you?” Laide crossed her arms, fighting the urge to unleash the truth she had suppressed for years. “Will anyone believe that a pastor raped a 20-year-old girl, all because her parents insisted she needed ‘deliverance’ for hanging around men?

Under the pretext of casting out demons, this pastor had his way with her. Down in the church basement, he raped her and got her pregnant.”

Laide began to tear up, her voice trembling. “The man walks away scot-free, and the girl aborts the baby and is left sterile. So, what else is there to say?” She tried to stay composed, but her heart was breaking. She hated this topic; every rape story in the news reopened her deep emotional wounds.

Claire didn’t need to ask anything more. Everything was painfully clear.

Laide turned away, weeping quietly. “I mean, who would have believed the girl back then? Certainly not her father.”

“Oh my God,” Claire whispered, paralysed by the truth. She was too horrified to move or offer comfort.

“Whatever people are saying online, believe them,” Laide said, wiping her tears. “I really hope you make the right choice for the sake of your children.”

That was all Claire needed to hear.

She drove home in tears. For the first time in ten years, she deeply regretted marrying Timothy. A storm of emotions raged inside her: grief, betrayal, and absolute fury that he had violated her own sister.

She thanked God her children were still young. She wouldn’t have to explain the horror of their father’s actions until they were old enough to understand. When she arrived home, she began packing their clothes. Whether they stayed at her parents’ house or a hotel, she just needed to escape and think clearly.

She no longer cared about public opinion. Her children did not deserve a monster for a father. This was not the man she thought she had chosen. People were right: he was evil. She recalled how he used to publicly condemn rapists, claiming they would “burn in hell,” while being a sexual predator himself.

“What’s wrong?”

His voice startled her, sending a jolt of fear through her chest. She turned around, trembling. “We are leaving.”

“To where?” he asked, confused. “What happened, love?”

“Love?“ she whispered bitterly. He didn’t even know what the word meant. Tears rolled down her cheeks. “Timothy, my sister was only twenty! You didn’t have to take advantage of her like that!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, avoiding her eyes—a telltale sign of his guilt.

“She got pregnant!” Claire yelled, her fear turning into rage. “She had an abortion that nearly cost her life! And you stayed married to me, making love to me while knowing what you did to my sister!”

She felt a sudden surge of rage, but restrained herself for the sake of her children.

“You did that to so many women!” she shouted. “Groping them and assaulting them under the guise of deliverance! Zainab is a child! And you violated her because of ‘demons’?!”

“Lower your voice,” he warned, stepping toward her.

“Why?!” she screamed louder. “Everyone knows what you are! You’re a rapist! A child molester! You’re a demon! I’m taking my children and leaving, and don’t try to stop me!”

Deflated, he sat on the bed as she packed faster, terrified he might try to manipulate her into staying. She clung to her anger to keep from wavering.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” he muttered weakly. “Maybe I need deliverance.”

“And you preach about God?” she spat out. How had he managed to deceive her, her family, and his congregation with his facade of righteousness?

She wept for the victims he had harmed. “You were supposed to be a pastor; someone who heals and protects people! You were supposed to represent God, yet you don’t even fear Him! You talk about His kingdom as if your dark soul belongs there!”

“So what do you want?” he asked quietly. “Are you going to leave me?”

She thought about the fallout: public scrutiny, judgment, stigma.

“Please, don’t leave me,” he begged, breaking down in tears. “I can’t go through this alone.”

Claire looked at him and asked, “If you were in my shoes, what would you do?”

Timothy fell silent. He knew his actions were unforgivable. Deep down, he recognised that his crimes were monstrous, that he had ignored the cries of women and children to satisfy his own desires.

Claire was right. She was right to protect their children. He looked away, completely defeated, unable to deny the truth. She was right to leave.
