Why Do Some Countries Have More Influence in the World Than Others?

Have you ever wondered why some countries can influence decisions across the world while others struggle to make their voices heard?

In international affairs, every country is recognised as a sovereign state, but not every country has the same level of influence.

Some countries have powerful economies, advanced technology, strong military capabilities and extensive diplomatic networks. These resources often give them greater opportunities to influence international decisions, negotiate agreements and shape global policies.

However, power is not limited to military strength or economic wealth. Some countries exercise influence through education, culture, diplomacy, international cooperation and the values they promote. This is often described as” soft power”.

For instance, a country that attracts international students, produces influential cultural content or provides humanitarian assistance can build relationships and shape how other countries perceive it.

This raises an important question for Africa. Despite the continent's natural resources, growing population and strategic importance, why do African countries sometimes struggle to exert greater influence over decisions that affect their interests?

The answer is not simply that Africa lacks resources. The ability to transform resources into influence also depends on effective leadership, strong institutions, economic development, regional cooperation and a clear foreign policy.

When African countries work together, they can strengthen their negotiating positions on issues such as international trade, climate change, security and development. When they act separately, their individual voices may carry less weight in certain negotiations.

Understanding international power helps us see that global affairs are not shaped by military strength alone. They are also shaped by how countries manage their resources, build relationships and pursue their interests.

Here is a question worth discussing: Do you think African countries can become major global powers by working together, or must each country first strengthen itself individually ?

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
