It came out by accident. The way most true things do.

We'd been together officially, properly together for a few weeks by then. Long enough that the newness had settled into something comfortable. Long enough that I'd stopped rehearsing what I said before I said it. Which was, in retrospect, exactly how it slipped out.

We'd been on his bed, not doing anything in particular. I was on my phone. He was doing that thing where he'd look at me for a few seconds, then look away, then look back, like I was a puzzle he was working on without wanting to be obvious about it. We'd been kissing earlier the kind of kissing that had a direction to it, that was headed somewhere and then I'd pulled back and he'd let me, but the atmosphere in the room still held the shape of where we'd almost gone.

He said, casually, "You know we can, right. If you want."

I kept my eyes on my phone. "I know."

"So?"

"So nothing." I turned a screen. "I'm just not ready."

He was quiet for a moment. Then, carefully, like he was testing the weight of the question before he asked it: "Have you before?"

I didn't answer immediately. Which was, itself, an answer.

He sat up slightly. "Wait."

"Don't make it a thing," I said, still not looking at him.

"I'm not making it a thing"

"You're making it a thing."

"I'm just" He stopped. Started again. "How? You're" He caught himself, but I'd already heard it.

I put my phone down and looked at him. "Say it. Go on."

He had the decency to look slightly caught. "I just didn't expect"

"At my age?" I finished for him, raising an eyebrow. "Say what you actually mean."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I didn't mean it like that."

"Then how did you mean it?"

He looked at me for a long moment. Not the puzzle look from before something more serious. Something that was recalibrating.

"I just want to make sure," he said finally, "that if we get there, it's because you actually want it. Not because you feel like you should. Not because of me."

I stared at him.

That was not what I'd expected him to say.

I'd expected teasing. I'd expected the kind of male response that turned something personal into something about him his ego, his curiosity, his sudden inflated sense of responsibility. I'd expected him to make it weird.

Instead he just looked at me, steady and even, waiting.

"I know what I want," I said. Quieter than before.

"I know you do," he said. "I'm just saying there's no rush. Yeah?"

I looked away. Out the window. At nothing in particular.

"Yeah," I said.

He lay back down beside me. Didn't make another move. Just settled, close enough that our arms were touching, and after a while he picked up his own phone and we sat in comfortable silence like the conversation hadn't just rearranged something between us.

But it had.

Because no one had ever said that to me before. No rush. Like my timeline was the one that mattered. Like he was genuinely unbothered by the waiting and not just saying he was.

I didn't tell him that night what it meant to me that he'd said it.

But I thought about it for a long time after I got home.

And somewhere on the drive back, I decided quietly, privately, with no announcement that when I was ready, it was going to be him.
