Chapter 6 – Breaking the Avoidance.

He noticed.

Of course, he noticed. I thought my excuses were smooth, believable. “I’m busy with school.” “I’ve got things to handle.” “Maybe another time.” But the truth was, I wasn’t that busy. I just didn’t want to admit what was really happening that I was avoiding him.

And he called me out on it.

One day, after yet another unanswered message, my phone rang. His name lit up the screen. I almost ignored it again, almost let it ring out, but something in me cracked.

Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was guilt. Maybe it was just exhaustion from running circles around myself.

So I answered.

His voice came through, calm but direct. “Are you really avoiding me?”

I froze for a second. He said it so plainly, like he already knew the truth and was just waiting for me to confirm it. I tried to laugh it off, but he didn’t let it slide. He pressed gently, but firmly, until I had nothing left but honesty.

“Yes,” I admitted, half defensive, half embarrassed.

“Why?” he asked.

And I didn’t have a good answer. Because how could I say it was easier to hide than to deal with the mess of feelings I didn’t even understand myself? How could I explain that her shadow still hung over us, making me second-guess every step?

Instead, I sighed and said, “I don’t know.”

There was a pause on the line, then he said something simple, something that caught me off guard: “Then let’s just go out. No drama. Just us.”

I should’ve said no. I wanted to. But the way he said it steady, without pressure, almost like an olive branch made it hard to refuse.

So I agreed.

And that’s how the wall of avoidance I’d built started to crack. One answered call, one reluctant “yes,” and suddenly, the space I had fought to keep between us began to close again.
