MINI-COMPETITIONS

Mini competitions are shorter, smaller contests than TwoCents' main essay and spoken-word competitions.

They typically last a few days and are often themed around world days, trending issues, or other timely topics.

Entries for mini-competitions are regular insights/posts, rather than essays.

At the end of each competition, we reward between 3 and 10 of the top posts based on either content quality or engagement score.

The "Japa" Dilemma & The Burden of Patriotism.

NIGERIA AT 66 - BRAIN DRAIN, INFRASTRUCTURE, & THE BURDEN OF PATRIOTISM

Every October 1st, the timeline is flooded with green and white flags, nostalgic speeches, and the undeniable resilience of the Nigerian spirit. But behind the celebrations lies a harsh reality that this generation is forced to navigate.

Despite our incredible human capital, foundational systems remain broken. From power generation to agricultural supply chains, the physical and economic infrastructure required to support a thriving modern society often feels like it is failing the very youth expected to build it.

This friction has fuelled the "Japa" wave, a mass exodus of our brightest minds seeking functional systems, fair compensation, and peace of mind abroad.
The situation forces us to confront an extremely difficult question.

When the system feels rigged against you, is it an act of betrayal to take your talents elsewhere, or is it the ultimate act of self-preservation?

Our position for this discussion is that while leaving is highly logical, a nation cannot be saved from the outside. True independence requires a generation willing to stay and build the micro-grids, the tech hubs, and the commercial infrastructure that the older generation failed to deliver.

But is it fair to demand that sacrifice?

Not everyone wants to be a resilience warrior.

Some people just want a normal life.

Their right to seek a functional environment must remain part of the conversation too.

YOUR TASK

Write a thoughtful argument addressing the modern Nigerian dilemma:

Does true patriotism mean staying to fix a broken system, or do you have a primary obligation to yourself to seek better opportunities, regardless of borders?

You may agree or disagree with our position, but your argument should go beyond emotion.

Consider the economic realities, the moral obligation to your homeland, the impact of losing our top talent, and whether it is fair to ask Gen Z to sacrifice their youth to fix foundational mistakes they didn’t make.

Make your case.
