Audacious me🎀

I went for an event somewhere in Abuja, and the convener asked something so simple, with a cash prize. Deep down in me, I knew the answer. I knew I could participate. I wanted to come out, but I didn't because I was scared of what people would say. Then I noticed I had been doing it in other areas of my life. I have been holding back, not volunteering, not speaking, not trying things, thinking too much about how I would appear, and shrinking myself for other people's comfort or opinions.

‎‎Then I started noticing one of my friends. I watched her take risks and do things I only did inside my head. I saw her get insulted, appear in anonymous posts in school, get laughed at, and even get gossiped about, but she continued. Then I noticed something: the people criticizing her weren't living her life for her. They were basically doing nothing while insulting and criticizing the life she was living. That's when the question came to my head: Who cares?

‎‎Audacity, for me, means doing the things I know how to do best while knowing someone might have something to say. It means walking onto a stage and expressing myself. It means posting my work. It means allowing myself to be seen trying. It means deciding to do the things I want to do, even when I know someone might have an opinion about me.

‎‎But the truth is, I wouldn't say that I am the fearless, audacious woman right now. I'm still trying. I'm still overthinking. I'm still feeling my heart beat faster before doing something. But there's another voice saying, Go anyway. That's the girl I'm becoming🎀.

‎
