Human, Except When I Am Wrong

I am a human being treated as a bot.

I am expected to know everything, forgetting what I know not.

expected to get it right every single time,

As though making a mistake is considered a crime.

I must be smart, but never outsmart

I must be strong, but never fall apart

I must be kind, but never take offence

and when I make a mistake, I must have good defence…

You want the results, but you question the process

Demand perfection, yet acknowledge no progress.

You want the finished product to be polished and complete,

But yet despise the human errors that make the process concrete.

Its funny how my mistakes has become a measure of my worth

As though I wasn’t imperfect from the moment of my birth

One wrong move and suddenly my competence is in doubt

All the things I did right are suddenly left out.

Yet when the mistake is yours, the story takes a different turn…

Suddenly there’s context, there’s a reason, there’s a lesson to learn.

You want me to consider what you intended to do

but when I ask for the same grace, it’s for some reason too much for you.

When you forget, you’re human. But when I forget, I’m careless…..

When you snap, you’re stressed. When I do, I’m thoughtless

When you fail, there’s a reason but when I fail, there’s a flaw.

The same mistake, two verdicts. Tell me, what exactly is the law?

You want the grace of being human, but the standards of a machine,

To make mistakes in private, yet appear forever “pristine”.

You want your flaws and your intentions to be understood

But mine are taken as proof that I’m never as good.

so I find it strange, this standard we have set..

We’re all allowed to be imperfect, just not the ones we judge, I bet.

We understand our own mistakes in ways we rarely do for others,

as though we were born as individuals, not somebody’s sons and daughters.

I am a human being. I get things wrong. I forget.

I have days when I fall short, and sad days I live to regret

but somehow, being human is now a privilege I must earn,

while you are simply human when it’s your own mistake in turn.

I am a human being treated as a bot,

I am expected to be “flawless” in a world that is not.

the irony isn’t that humans make mistakes.

It’s that we understand our own,

but struggle to understand everybody else’s.
