The Things We Owe Our Years

My cousin was born on my matriculation day.

By the time I graduate from university, he’ll be four.

Four years of learning, growing,

Four years of me trying to make something of myself.

Sometimes, I wonder what I’ll have to show for those years.

I don’t expect to have my entire life figured out by graduation, but I want to look back and recognise something meaningful in the time I’ve spent. I want to see that my efforts are something.

It’s strange how someone’s growth can become a measure of your own time.

He will keep having birthdays and each one will remind me that another year of my life has passed.

And that brings me to something I’ve been thinking about; when did we start treating time as something we must justify?

Another year passes and we ask what we’ve achieved.

We reach a certain age and wonder whether we are where we should be.

we become so concerned with having something to show for our lives .

we haven’t even finished living a chapter before we are worrying about how we’ll judge it when it’s over.

I haven’t graduated yet, but I’m already thinking about what I’ll have accomplished by then.

how many of us are so occupied with becoming the people we want to be that we struggle to appreciate the people we’re becoming.

I still want to achieve great things.

I want to look back and be proud of what I’ve done with my time.

But I wonder when the desire to build a meaningful life became a reason to be dissatisfied with the one we’re living.

My cousin will grow regardless….Four years will pass, regardless.

And when I finally graduate, I hope I’ll have accomplished the things I dream of today.

But I also hope I won’t spend so much time worrying about what I’ll have to show for my life that I forget to live it.
