There's a meme going around with a quote that probably never left anyone's mouth something about giving Nigerians eyeglasses "because they have eye problems" if they can't see all the good the government has done. It's satire. Everyone sharing it knows it's satire.

And yet.

1.The joke works because it's plausible.

That's the real punchline. Nobody had to stretch far to make this believable. A country where citizens are routinely told their perception is the problem that inflation "isn't that bad," that fuel subsidy removal was "necessary sacrifice," that the economy is "on the path to recovery" doesn't need much satirical exaggeration. The meme isn't inventing a tone. It's compressing one that's already familiar.

2. "You just can't see it" is a real governing strategy, memes aside.

Strip the joke down and what's left is an actual pattern: when results don't match the rhetoric, the gap gets explained as a perception problem, not a performance problem. Citizens aren't struggling they're just not appreciating the struggle correctly. That's not a punchline. That's messaging.

3. The eyeglasses joke lands because glasses fix nothing structural.

Better vision doesn't change what's actually in front of you. That's exactly why it's such a sharp joke it mimics a government solving optics instead of outcomes. Fix how something looks, not what it is.

But if clearly we need glasses to see what they truly claim to have done, then they need glasses too. Because they don't know where or what they really mean to do if that's all there is to show for it.

The joke was never really about eyeglasses. It was always about who's actually failing to see.

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
