The Strange Need to Have The Last Word

Humans…

We don’t just want to be heard.

We want the final sentence.

The final explanation.

The final impression.

We want to leave a conversation knowing

that our words are the ones still echoing

when the other person stopped responding.

Funny, isn’t it?

How a conversation about understanding

can turn into a competition about who gets to finish speaking.

We interrupt to correct,

not because the detail matters,

but because being wrong even briefly,

feels like losing something.

We explain what we have explained,

rephrase what we have already said,

and construct entire paragraphs

for people who stopped listening three sentences ahead.

And heaven forbids someone walks away

without knowing what we meant.

Because for some reason ,

being misunderstood is worse

than being exhausting.

We call it standing our ground.

We call it defending ourselves.

We call it refusing to be disrespected.

Some people cannot let a disagreement rest.

They need the final reply,

the clever comeback,

the sentence that leaves zero room for another.

Others say nothing.

They close the conversation,

put their phones away,

and proceed to have seventeen imaginary arguments in their heads.

Rehearsing what they should have said,

what they could have said,

and what they will certainly say

if the opportunity ever presents itself again.

So much for letting things go.

Why do we want the last word?

because silence feels like surrender.

Because an unanswered accusation

feels like an accepted truth.

Because walking away can feel “odd” and “wrong” in our opinion.

But here is the irony:

You can have the last word

and still be the least understood.

You can win the argument

and lose the person.

You can explain yourself until there is nothing left to explain

and still fail to make someone see your side.

And you can spend so much time

trying to make someone understand your intentions

that you never stop to understand theirs.

Not every disagreement needs a winner.

Not every accusation deserves a defence.

Not every silence is an admission of guilt.

And not every conversation

needs to end with you.

Because sometimes,

the most important thing you can say

is nothing at all.

But I wonder…

If we are all so desperate to have the last word,

who is actually listening to the first?

You see…the problem was never

that we had too much to say.

It is that we have made being heard

more important than hearing.

And somewhere between proving our points

and protecting our pride,

we forgot that conversations

were never meant to be battlefields.

We came to exchange words,

but keep leaving with wounds.

Humans…

We are strange creatures.

We don’t just want to be understood.

We want to be understood

on our own terms,

in our own words,

with absolutely no room

for another interpretation.

And that,

I think,

is the strange need

to have the last word.
