You Don't Own Your Digital Life. You're Renting It.
<p>Your phone can disappear tomorrow.</p><p><br/></p><p>You can buy another one.</p><p><br/></p><p>The more unsettling possibility is that you could lose access to far more than the device itself.</p><p><br/></p><p>Your photographs. Your emails. Your documents. Your conversations. Your notes. Your work. Years of memories sitting behind a password and a login screen.</p><p><br/></p><p>We call them our files because they feel like they belong to us.</p><p><br/></p><p>But much of modern digital life exists inside systems that somebody else owns, operates and can change.</p><p><br/></p><p>That is the strange bargain we have made with the cloud.</p><p><br/></p><p>We gave up the old habit of keeping everything close in exchange for being able to access almost everything from almost anywhere.</p><p><br/></p><p>And it worked brilliantly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Until you start asking a rather uncomfortable question:</p><p><br/></p><p>If someone else controls the place where your digital life lives, how much of it do you actually own?</p>
